I had the opportunity to interview Gregg Donnelly of Jack Donnelly Khaki Company. Gregg is my best friend’s cousin and when I heard he started his own khaki line, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for an interesting blog post.
Khakis are a staple in every man’s wardrobe and finding the perfect pair isn’t always easy. Every guy wants those comfortable, worn in khakis that you can wear in every situation…work, golf, a party, sporting event, you name it! Maybe you wouldn’t want to wear khakis pumping iron at the gym, but I mean you could try it out! Gregg Donnelly has created the quintessential khakis that you will never want to take off. 1. What inspired you to create your own khaki company?
I felt, and eventually came to know, that there was a void in the khaki market, and a general lack of excitement surrounding the khaki pant. Sure, tons of companies make them, but in my opinion, few were putting a strong emphasis on it. We want the Jack Donnelly name to be synonymous with the best khakis. We want Jack Donnelly to be the standard in khakis.
2. What do you want your current customers and potential customers to know about Jack Donnelly?
For our current customers, I want them know that we sincerely appreciate their business, and we look forward to grow our brand by continuing to deliver quality products. For any potential customers I would just simply tell them, we offer a top quality, great fitting, American-made khaki. Everything we do and all our products are 100% guaranteed.
3. What makes your khakis different than others?
I don’t think it is one thing in particular, but more that each component and process that goes into creating the final product that makes it unique – the fabric, construction, fit, trimmings, and style all combine to make the finished product the best. There are no wasted steps – everything has a purpose. They’re made with the finest sourced materials, constructed by the best American manufacturing, and fit better than any other pair I’ve seen. More importantly, all of those superior qualities are offered to our customers at a good value. In my opinion there isn’t a company out there that has consistently dialed in on those key elements the way we have.
4. If you could have one celebrity model your khakis, who would you choose and why?
Great question, but yet a tough one. So many people come to mind and so many ways to look at it. I would have to go with my man Liam Gallagher from Oasis. I’ve always been a huge fan of his. He is one of those guys – where it seems everything he does is cool. He always is dressed to perfection. He knows his role and plays the part, and at the end of the day, I respect that.
5. What styling tips can you give to guys trying to step up their fashion game?
Two things come to mind – make sure your clothes fit properly. I see a lot of too loose or too tight. You need to hit the sweet spot right in between. And since we’re talking pants, I’d say always make sure your khakis are fresh pressed and looking sharp.
6. What is your favorite accessory and why?
I have two – A custom TCU needlepoint belt from Smathers & Branson. I really like the needlepoint style. S & B makes a quality one, and I love the fact I can rep my team while wearing it. Second would be my Knockaround Sunglasses – Huge fan of this company and product. I suppose they’re a take on the classic Wayfarer style. They come in a bunch of different cool color combos and designs. Also, they’re cheap (price wise), so you can buy a couple pairs at a time and/or don’t have to sweat it if you lose them.
7. How do you like to wear your Jack Donnellys?
Honestly, it depends on the situation. Luckily, the JDs are versatile, so they hold up in most. On a day-to-day basis, my go to is our Dalton Pant -Flat Front, Khaki, casual button up shirt, and a pair of cowboy boots or loafers.
8. Can you tell me about the process behind making Jack Donnellys?
The construction of the khaki is so important. A pair of khakis can be made from the highest quality, most expensive fabric available to the industry, but if it’s not well made, it will be an impossible feat to ensure the pant’s durability. All of our khakis are hand-made in America. They are made with the finest craftsmanship America has to offer, and produced with the greatest attention to detail and care. Because our headquarters are less than a few hours from where our khakis are actually made, we are afforded the ability to keep a close eye on the entire khaki-making process and to make sure they’re manufactured to our exact specifications. We didn’t cut any corners, and took every step necessary to ensure the durability, integrity, and longevity of our pants. We want the customer to know they are paying for the best-constructed product.
9. Can you give us advice on hemming JDs?
The first thing you need to do is wash them. We recommend that because you want to get an accurate length at the tailor, and this will account for any shrinkage in the length. We put all our khakis through a series of professional washes to stabilize the sizing among other things, but you still may encounter a little vertical shrinkage. The final two things you need to consider are the break and the finish. The break is where you want to the pant to sit on your shoe. You can choose to rock the “high waters”, sport the safe mid-break, or really let loose with the full break. As far as the finish is concerned, you can either go with the straight, clean finish or the classic cuff. I’d recommend the straight finish for flat front pants and the cuff for pleated. It really all comes down to personal preference though.
10. What is your favorite aspect of owning your own khaki company and what can we expect from JD in the future?
I enjoy the excitement and uncertainty each day brings. As a young, growing company each day is different and it’s exciting being involved with every aspect of the business. Also, I enjoy interacting with our customers on a personal level, and hearing what they have to say. Here at JD we have some awesome things in the works. We have plans to expand our line into different fabrics and colors, especially from a seasonal aspect. We’ve got a new, slimmer cut pant coming out this summer, as well as a longer inseam short that we’re very excited for.
