Stress affects everything, including your brain, body, emotions, productivity, self-care, and even relationship interactions.

Your gut is one area particularly vulnerable to stress and the connection is bidirectional. Emotional and physical triggers can impact the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and digestive distress can cause or perpetuate stress symptoms.

Many have experienced a “nervous stomach” because of emotions. This is related to the alterations in gut function due to stress. It disrupts intestinal motility, digestive and hormonal secretions, pain sensation, gut microbe populations, and the GI mucosa and lining. Furthermore, long-term stress can lead to negative shifts in the immune response via the gut and result in systemic issues, increasing the risk for several diseases.

In my latest post and video, I describe how to use naturopathic and functional medicine modalities to soothe a stressed-out belly and support optimal gut-brain health.
