{"id":12302,"date":"2013-03-28T12:12:42","date_gmt":"2013-03-28T16:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/2013\/03\/greater-than-sports-new-apparel-store.html"},"modified":"2017-11-08T13:58:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T18:58:00","slug":"greater-than-sports-new-apparel-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/2013\/03\/greater-than-sports-new-apparel-store\/","title":{"rendered":"Business Idea Hatched in College Comes to Life In Saratoga as New apparel Store"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-left\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"greater-than-wm.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2013\/06\/greater-than-wm.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-caption\">Mike Borisenok, left, Kelly Sullivan and Dan Gejay, all graduates of the University of New Hampshire, have developed their own approach to designing and distributing sports apparel\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>By Pamela Fisher<\/p>\n<p>While many new college graduates<br \/>\nstruggle to start their careers, Saratoga native<br \/>\nMike Borisenok left college focused on<br \/>\nexpanding his business just days following<br \/>\nhis 2012 graduation from the University of<br \/>\nNew Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Than Sports, located above<br \/>\nImpressions at 368 Broadway in Saratoga<br \/>\nSprings, is an online athletic apparel<br \/>\nbusiness that has recently added a retail<br \/>\nboutique to its business headquarters.<\/p>\n<div>Borisenok dreamed up the company his<br \/>\nfreshman year in college during a classroom<br \/>\npresentation focused on legendary fashion<br \/>\ndesigner Coco Chanel.\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We were discussing how she was ahead of her time, designing clothing she would like to be wearing,&#8221; said Borisenok. &#8220;I looked around and realized a shift had happened in athletic wear. My classmates were wearing this type of clothing outside of working out and playing sports. Athletic wear had become lifestyle apparel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Borisenok was a member of the UNH men&#8217;s hockey team, and was balancing being a student, an athlete and an entrepreneur.<\/p>\n<p>He shared his business idea to create lifestyle athletic apparel with friend and fellow UNH art student kelly Sullivan, asking her to design a T-shirt. Their peers liked Sullivan&#8217;s designs, and Borisenok&#8217;s confidence in his business concept solidified.<\/p>\n<p>In the following years, GTS designed apparel for UNH, Towson University, and the Albany Academy, among others. &#8220;every team we&#8217;ve worked with has become a repeat customer,&#8221; said Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Greater Than Sports has grown to its current management team of Borsenok, president, Sullivan who serves as executive design artist, and fellow UNH graduates Dan Gejay, director of marketing, and David Wolfe, director of sales.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the young entrepreneurs are promoting their passion for sports through what they call a &#8220;new age business model,&#8221; engaging with customers continuously via linked social media accounts. The company shares experiences such as &#8220;behind-thescenes&#8221; images on Instagram, workout playlists on its website, and how-to exercise videos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our slogan is: &#8216;It&#8217;s about the journey&#8217;,&#8221; said Sullivan. &#8220;If you buy Greater Than Sports, you&#8217;re part of our journey. We want to interact with our customers, build the community into our brand, and be approachable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Before developing a retail space in January, Greater Than Sports used a trailer as its moving showroom to present apparel options to various sports teams. GTS staff said &#8220;their retail store on wheels&#8221; will return in the spring and summer months, making appearances at various events.
