{"id":15176,"date":"2014-06-04T03:17:50","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T07:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/2014\/06\/new-senior-vp-gm-at-globalfoundries-malta.html"},"modified":"2014-06-04T03:17:50","modified_gmt":"2014-06-04T07:17:50","slug":"new-senior-vp-gm-at-globalfoundries-malta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/2014\/06\/new-senior-vp-gm-at-globalfoundries-malta\/","title":{"rendered":"Former IBM Official Named Senior VP, GM At GlobalFoundries Operations In Malta"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-left\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"global - tom caulfield.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saratoga.com\/saratogabusinessjournal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2014\/06\/global20-20tom20caulfield.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"209\" class=\"aligncenter\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"img-caption\">Dr. Thomas Caulfield will lead the operations and expansion at Fab 8 in Malta.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>GlobalFoundries, the provider of advanced<br \/>\nsemiconductor manufacturing<br \/>\ntechnology, in May appointed Dr. Thomas<br \/>\nCaulfield as senior vice president and<br \/>\ngeneral manager of the company&#8217;s 300mm<br \/>\nsemiconductor wafer manufacturing facility<br \/>\n(Fab 8) in Malta.<\/p>\n<p>Caulfield, with more than 20 years of<br \/>\ntechnical and global executive experience,<br \/>\nwill lead the operations, expansion and<br \/>\nramp-up of semiconductor manufacturing<br \/>\nproduction at Fab 8, where GlobalFoundries<br \/>\nsupports customers on advanced<br \/>\nsemiconductor manufacturing technology<br \/>\nplatforms, including 28 nanometer (nm),<br \/>\n20nm, and the recently announced 14nm<br \/>\nFinFET platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tom is a proven and respected industry<br \/>\nleader with more than two decades of semiconductor<br \/>\ntechnology and manufacturing<br \/>\nexperience and we are excited to have<br \/>\nhim join our team to drive the next phase<br \/>\nof growth at Fab 8,&#8221; said GlobalFoundries<br \/>\nCEO Sanjay Jha.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are expanding our Fab 8 manufacturing<br \/>\ncampus, strengthening strategic partnerships,<br \/>\nand deepening customer relationships<br \/>\nso we can offer our customers leading-edge<br \/>\ntechnology and a more flexible and cost effective<br \/>\nway of doing business,&#8221; Jha said.<\/p>\n<p>Caulfield&#8217;s career spans engineering,<br \/>\nmanagement, operational leadership and<br \/>\nglobal executive experience with leading<br \/>\ntechnology companies.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Caulfield served as president<br \/>\nand chief operations officer at Soraa,<br \/>\na leading developer of GaN on GaNTM (gallium<br \/>\nnitride on gallium nitride) solid-state<br \/>\nlighting technology. Prior to Soraa, Caulfield<br \/>\nserved as president and COO of Ausra,<br \/>\na provider of large-scale concentrated solar<br \/>\npower solutions for concentrated solar<br \/>\npower solutions for electricity generation<br \/>\nand industrial steam production.<\/p>\n<p>Before leading global operations at<br \/>\nAusra, Caulfield served as executive vice<br \/>\npresident of sales, marketing and customer<br \/>\nservice at Novellus Systems, Inc. where he<br \/>\noversaw world-wide field operations for<br \/>\nover 1,200 employees.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining Novellus Systems, Caulfield<br \/>\nspent 17 years at IBM in a variety of<br \/>\nsenior leadership roles, ultimately serving<br \/>\nas vice president of 300mm semiconductor<br \/>\noperations for IBM&#8217;s Microelectronics<br \/>\nDivision, leading its state-of-the-art wafer<br \/>\nfabrication operations in East Fishkill, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the Fab 8 project began<br \/>\nin July 2009 and the facility is currently<br \/>\nsupporting multiple customers on multiple<br \/>\ntechnology platforms, as well as completing<br \/>\nconstruction on additional manufacturing<br \/>\nfacilities to support increased customer<br \/>\ndemand, company officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009 the project has created approximately<br \/>\n2,200 new direct jobs and<br \/>\nexpects to create an additional 600 jobs<br \/>\nthrough the end of the year, supporting<br \/>\nmore than approximately 10,000 indirect<br \/>\njobs in the economy based on research by<br \/>\nthe Semiconductor Industry Association,<br \/>\naccording to the company.
