Is your dryer running more slowly than
\nwhen it was brand new? Are your clothes damp
\nafter running the dryer on high heat? Is there
\na musty smell in your home when you run
\nyour dryer? People who say yes to any of those
\nquestions should probably have a clogged or
\nimproperly installed dryer vent.<\/p>\n

In older homes it was standard to have the
\ndryer on an exterior wall with the vent going
\nstraight outside. This was a great setup that
\ncaused little trouble. With newer construction
\nand more convenient laundry areas, dryer
\nvents can be found to be 15 to 40 feet or more
\nin length. This vent can be riddled with elbows
\nand bends that drastically slow the output of
\nair and create clogging spots.<\/p>\n

If you have ever ignited lint you would realize
\nit is extremely flammable. Lint comes from
\nyour clothes and gets combined with human
\nhair, pet hair, and other fi bers. While your dryer
\ndries your clothes, it also dries the lint which
\nbecomes plastered to your dryer vent walls.<\/p>\n

As the vent becomes more blocked, it causes
\nyour dryer to overheat which increases the temperature
\nin the vent where it may ignite flammable lint.
\nyour dryer is also one of the top energy users
\nin your home. The drying time of clothes can
\nbe tripled when the dryer vent is dirty. This is
\nan excessive waste of money, energy, and time.<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Fire Administration
\nNational Fire Data Center, clothes dryers annually
\naccount for about 15,600 structure fires,
\n15 deaths and 300 injuries. The number one
\nreason in over 70 percent of all cases are due
\nto failure to clean the vent.<\/p>\n

A quick review shows that having a dryer
\nvent cleaning will help:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Reduce dryer fires.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Lower your carbon monoxide levels for
\ngas dryers.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Reduce moisture issues in your home.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Save you money on your energy bill.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Save you time.<\/p>\n

In addition to having your vent regularly inspected,
\nsome helpful tips are: Never leave your
\nhome when your dryer is on. Always protect the
\nterminal of your dryer vent from animals. Always
\nclean your lint screen after every use. Replace any
\nvinyl connectors with aluminum fl ex connectors.<\/p>\n

Make sure your vent, which passes through
\nwalls, is rigid metal, not flex connector or PVC.
\nCheck to see if your dryer isn’t too close to the
\nwall and crushing your vent.<\/p>\n

Remember, preventative maintenance is key,
\nif you’re already experiencing problems then
\nyou are gambling with your safety every time
\nyou operate your dryer.<\/p>\n
