Horses have a long history in the local
\neconomy, but for a few children who attend
\nNipper Knolls Therapeutic Riding Program,
\nthis is not just about learning to ride. it is
\nabout getting healthy, and building physical
\nskills and self-esteem.<\/p>\n

Nipper Knolls Therapeutic Riding Program
\nhelps children with a variety of special
\nneeds strive toward goals by offering
\ntherapeutic horse riding lessons. Many of
\nthe children in the program are on the autism
\nspectrum. Other children have anxiety,
\nADHD, or physical disabilities.<\/p>\n

Cathy Lamando operates the program and
\nserves as the instructor. She has worked as
\na physical therapist her entire life, and saw
\nthis as a way to blend physical therapy with
\nher love of horses. She is a PATH certified
\ntherapeutic riding instructor, and maintains
\nmembership with PATH International
\nand the American Hippotherapy Association
\nwith Level 2 therapist completion.<\/p>\n

“They are learning self-esteem, socialization,
\nstrength, core balance. it’s a great
\nbalance of social skills and physical skills”
\nsaid Lamando of her clients.<\/p>\n

There are two programs offered at Nipper
\nKnolls: therapeutic riding and hippotherapy.
\nTherapeutic riding is a social model that
\nuses horse riding for the purposes of achieving
\ncognitive, physical, emotional and social
\nwell-being in children with special needs.
\nDuring a lesson, students will learn to brush
\na horse, safety rules, tacking, leading, riding
\nand more.<\/p>\n

Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational
\nor speech therapy that utilizes horses to
\nmimic the natural movements of the human
\nbody. it is used as part of an integrated
\ntreatment program to achieve a desired goal
\nfor children.<\/p>\n

Classes are small, with only two students
\nin each therapeutic riding lesson, she said.
\nHippotherapy classes are one-on-one. Lamando
\noversees the classes, and there are
\nside walkers to accompany each child on
\nthe horse. The program is always looking
\nfor volunteers.<\/p>\n

While some children might experience
\nhesitation at other activities, several children
\nhave found their calling at Nipper
\nKnolls, according to Lamando.<\/p>\n

“One parent said their son couldn’t play
\nsoccer or basketball because it’s too much
\nactivity” she said. “But with the horses, he
\ncomes here and he’s turning into an independent
\nlittle rider. For him this is his sport.”<\/p>\n

Nipper Knolls operates out of North Country
\nHorses Riding Program in Gansevoort.
\nPreviously Nipper Knolls also had programs
\nout of Burchland Country Experience in
\nHartford, Washington County, but the owners
\nare selling the property.<\/p>\n

There are five horses used in the program.
\nThey are specially trained to be used in the
\ntherapeutic riding program. Horses learn to
\nbe around physical therapy items like rings
\nand balls, to not fear noises, and to be calm
\naround the touch of children. North country
\nHorses donates some horses for the program.
\nOthers are leased.<\/p>\n

Nipper Knolls riding lessons are private
\npay. Therapeutic riding lessons are one hour
\nlong and $40 per lesson. Hippotherapy lessons
\nare 30 minutes long and $50 per lesson.
\nSome people might be able to have their
\ninsurance provider reimburse them for the
\nhippotherapy lessons.<\/p>\n

Lamando said there is a special bond between
\nthe child and the horse. From learning
\nto ride, to the basics of grooming a horse
\nand cleaning a stall, nipper knolls provides
\nchildren with confi dence, gross and fine motor
\nskills, social activity, and fun.<\/p>\n
