Many of<br \/>\nthe children in the program are on the autism<br \/>\nspectrum. Other children have anxiety,<br \/>\nADHD, or physical disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Cathy Lamando operates the program and<br \/>\nserves as the instructor. She has worked as<br \/>\na physical therapist her entire life, and saw<br \/>\nthis as a way to blend physical therapy with<br \/>\nher love of horses. She is a PATH certified<br \/>\ntherapeutic riding instructor, and maintains<br \/>\nmembership with PATH International<br \/>\nand the American Hippotherapy Association<br \/>\nwith Level 2 therapist completion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are learning self-esteem, socialization,<br \/>\nstrength, core balance. it&#8217;s a great<br \/>\nbalance of social skills and physical skills&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Lamando of her clients.<\/p>\n<p>There are two programs offered at Nipper<br \/>\nKnolls: therapeutic riding and hippotherapy.<br \/>\nTherapeutic riding is a social model that<br \/>\nuses horse riding for the purposes of achieving<br \/>\ncognitive, physical, emotional and social<br \/>\nwell-being in children with special needs.<br \/>\nDuring a lesson, students will learn to brush<br \/>\na horse, safety rules, tacking, leading, riding<br \/>\nand more.<\/p>\n<p>Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational<br \/>\nor speech therapy that utilizes horses to<br \/>\nmimic the natural movements of the human<br \/>\nbody. it is used as part of an integrated<br \/>\ntreatment program to achieve a desired goal<br \/>\nfor children.<\/p>\n<p>Classes are small, with only two students<br \/>\nin each therapeutic riding lesson, she said.<br \/>\nHippotherapy classes are one-on-one. Lamando<br \/>\noversees the classes, and there are<br \/>\nside walkers to accompany each child on<br \/>\nthe horse. The program is always looking<br \/>\nfor volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>While some children might experience<br \/>\nhesitation at other activities, several children<br \/>\nhave found their calling at Nipper<br \/>\nKnolls, according to Lamando.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One parent said their son couldn&#8217;t play<br \/>\nsoccer or basketball because it&#8217;s too much<br \/>\nactivity&#8221; she said. &#8220;But with the horses, he<br \/>\ncomes here and he&#8217;s turning into an independent<br \/>\nlittle rider. For him this is his sport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nipper Knolls operates out of North Country<br \/>\nHorses Riding Program in Gansevoort.<br \/>\nPreviously Nipper Knolls also had programs<br \/>\nout of Burchland Country Experience in<br \/>\nHartford, Washington County, but the owners<br \/>\nare selling the property.<\/p>\n<p>There are five horses used in the program.<br \/>\nThey are specially trained to be used in the<br \/>\ntherapeutic riding program. Horses learn to<br \/>\nbe around physical therapy items like rings<br \/>\nand balls, to not fear noises, and to be calm<br \/>\naround the touch of children. North country<br \/>\nHorses donates some horses for the program.<br \/>\nOthers are leased.<\/p>\n<p>Nipper Knolls riding lessons are private<br \/>\npay. Therapeutic riding lessons are one hour<br \/>\nlong and $40 per lesson. Hippotherapy lessons<br \/>\nare 30 minutes long and $50 per lesson.<br \/>\nSome people might be able to have their<br \/>\ninsurance provider reimburse them for the<br \/>\nhippotherapy lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Lamando said there is a special bond between<br \/>\nthe child and the horse.
