A contingent from the Saratoga County Economic Development Corp. recently visited the United Arab Emirates to learn about opportunities for business\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

At the Saratoga EDC the focus has consistently
\nbeen three overarching principles
\nthat work in conjunction to achieve vital
\ngoals: attraction, retention and job creation.<\/p>\n

In pursuit of these goals staff members
\nfrom SEDC, along with a diverse group of
\nindividuals from around the capital region,
\nventured to the United Arab Emirates to
\nform new business relationships, reacquaint
\nourselves with previous partners, and learn
\nabout opportunities for growth.<\/p>\n

From day one the delegation experienced
\nfirsthand the abundance of innovation,
\ngrowth and the overall economic impact
\nAbu Dhabi and Dubai are experiencing.<\/p>\n

From better understanding global leaders’
\ninterests and investments, to opening opportunities
\nfor manufacturers\/distributors
\nto export, each day was spent deepening a
\nknowledge of how the UAE is thriving, and
\nhow that example can be brought back to
\nSaratoga County.<\/p>\n

Several participants from the delegation
\nwalked away with a renewed understanding
\nof how this new knowledge could impact
\ntheir business in the United States. Rajat
\nGhoshal, vice president of Polyset Co. Inc.,
\nsaid not only could establishing new relationships
\nin the UAE assist Polyset’s efforts to
\nmarket products abroad, but also increase
\nsales locally.<\/p>\n

Ghoshal said “relationships that already
\nexisted were strengthened by the bond of our
\nodyssey. Especially with the representatives
\nfrom SEDC and the Saratoga Chamber of
\nCommerce, the opportunity to learn more
\nabout each other on a personal level was
\ninvaluable.”<\/p>\n

Michael Relyea of the Amanus group,
\nstressed the importance of building on present
\nrelationships with the UAE . He said the
\ntrip “provided me with an opportunity to visit
\nAmman Jordan for two days, where I was
\nable to speak with a Jordanian developer
\nand his team about a mixed use concept. I
\nalso met with several local businesses while
\nI was there and had an opportunity to help
\nthem understand how possible partnerships
\ncould be created.”<\/p>\n

Like any good relationship, communication
\nand understanding are key. That’s why
\nit is important that economic growth and
\nbusiness leaders at the SEDC and Saratoga
\nCounty Chamber of Commerce are mobilizing
\ndirect bilateral engagement with the
\nUnited Arab Emirates (UAE ) business
\ncommunity.<\/p>\n

Dave Cummings, a well-known thoroughbred
\nowner and racer experienced first
\nhand the value of good relationships and
\ncommunication. While in the UAE he had
\nthe chance encounter of running into Seth
\nBenzel, a New York native who Cummings
\nhad shared many laughs with at our very own
\nOklahoma training track.<\/p>\n

In 2013, Benzel showed his resolve to go to
\nthe UAE and train for the Zayat stable. Now,
\nCummings is working out a shared thoroughbred
\nownership with another traveler in the
\ndelegation, with the possibility of visiting
\nBenzel in the UAE again.<\/p>\n

Bill Teator, president of Capital Advocates
\nLLC, said it is vital that the Capital Region
\nmaintain an ongoing partnership with this
\nregion of the world and with an industry that
\nhas so heavily invested in us.<\/p>\n

“Relationships must be a two-way street.
\nUndertaking an assessment of our region’s
\nhuman, capital and resource assets can help
\nus address important needs of the UAE ,”
\nhe said. “Job skills training in building
\ntechnologies, multi-cultural education and
\nhealthcare workforce development are all
\nin demand to keep up with a diversifying
\neconomy and rapidly growing melting pot of people that is modern Dubai
\nand Abu Dhabi. By offering solutions from our region helpful
\nto their growth and stability, we can cultivate
\nmore foreign investment and best practices
\nimportant to our own.”<\/p>\n

Teator said one example could be research
\nand development collaboration in enhanced
\nenergy efficiency technologies.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes we have to go the extra
\nmile to get to know our neighbor. In this
\ncase, our neighbors have already directly
\nsupported 3,000 employee households,
\nthousands more who helped build Global
\nFoundries and they are active leaders in
\nour historically important horse racing
\nindustry. These must be starting points,
\nnot end points. Cultural understanding
\ncan foster more bilateral trade and investment
\nopportunities to ‘in-source’ capital,
\ntalent and sales beneficial to both region’s
\neconomic stability,” he said.<\/p>\n

He commended the Saratoga County
\nChamber and SEDC for having the vision
\nto bolster the engagement through broader
\npersonal understanding of both sides of this
\nvaluable relationship.<\/p>\n
