Samsung and GlobalFoundries have landed
\norders from Apple to produce the 14-nanometer
\nA9 processor starting next year, according to
\na report in DigiTimes, a daily newspaper for
\nsemiconductor, electronics, computer and
\ncommunications industries in Taiwan and the
\ngreater China region.<\/p>\n
These 14nm chips will be created in GlobalFoundries’
\nFab 8 factory in Malta, which
\nSamsung will also use to produce Apple’s
\nA-series chips.
\nApple’s 14-nanometer A9 processors are
\nexpected to be used in the company’s iPhone
\nand iPad models starting in 2015.<\/p>\n
Media reports from wide-ranging sources are
\nreporting the situation. However a spokesman
\nat the Malta plant said on July 2, “We have a
\nnumber of customer design wins for our 20nm
\nand 14nm technologies at Fab 8. But beyond
\nthat, we don’t provide details on customer
\nproducts or relationships.”<\/p>\n
The DigiTimes report says the two foundries
\nplan to push their initial 14nm LPE (low
\npower early) process into risk production in the
\nfourth quarter of this year, with small volume
\nproduction in early 2015.<\/p>\n
The report also states that Apple’s longtime
\npartner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
\nCompany (TSMC) will try to secure orders for
\nApple’s A9 chip by introducing new semiconductor
\nprocesses by early next year.<\/p>\n
Apple is additionally considering Intel as a
\npotential partner to produce the A9.<\/p>\n
Samsung and GlobalFoundries announced
\nin April that they would be adopting the same
\nchip production process to prepare for next-gen
\nmobile devices.<\/p>\n
Samsung and GlobalFoundries have helped
\neach other over the past year, with Samsung helping
\nset up the Fab 8 factory in Malta last year, and
\nGlobalFoundries providing the backup location
