On Saturday, July 5, the Chamber of
\nSouthern Saratoga County welcomed its
\nnewest member with a bang – literally –
\nas the Onrust, a replica of the first commercial
\nvessel constructed in New York
\nstate, fired its cannon and cut the ribbon
\ncelebrating the 400th anniversary of the
\n1614 maiden voyage of its namesake.<\/p>\n

The original Onrust was a fur trading
\nvessel built in New York by Dutch
\nnavigator Adriaen Block to replace one
\ndestroyed by fire the previous winter. In
\n2006, Don Rittner and Greta Wagle led
\nthe effort to construct a replica of the
\nOnrust, employing original 17th century
\nconstruction methods.<\/p>\n

The ship is currently based in Waterford,
\nand delights visitors to every waterfront
\nfestival with frequent firings of its
\ncannon amid shouts of “fire in the hole!”
\nThe public is welcome to climb aboard
\nto view the cargo hold and other parts of
\nthe vessel.<\/p>\n

The sense of history and purpose was
\nevident at the ribbon cutting ceremony,
\nattended by Congressman Paul Tonko
\nand state Assemblyman John McDonald.<\/p>\n

“As we cut this ribbon and begin our
\nrelationship with the Chamber of Commerce
\nit’s important to remember that
\nin 1614 the Onrust was intended for
\nbusiness,” said Don Rittner, president of
\nthe Onrust Project, Inc. “It is our oldest
\nexample of a Made in New York product.”<\/p>\n

It was perhaps fitting that the celebration
\ntook place at Saratoga County’s
\ninternational harbor during a major festival,
\nwhere the 17th century vessel was
\nmoored alongside steamboats commemorating
\nthe motive power first employed
\nin the 1800s, plus 20th century yachts
\nfrom around the country, and finally the
\nultra-modern solar powered demonstration
\nvessel RA, departing on its second
\nannual tour of the Erie Canal to promote
\nthe virtues of clean energy and power
\nfrom the sun.<\/p>\n

Several weeks earlier another alternative-
\nfueled vessel, the sailing barge
\nCeres, made national news during its
\nvisit to Mechanicville by taking on cargo
\nfrom two local business owners.<\/p>\n

As Halfmoon farmer Michelle Petuske
\nloaded cartons of her locally-grown and
\nmade Pixie’s Preserves, she commented
\nthat “I was just kind of fascinated by
\nit — the idea of putting my product on
\na barge,” and reports from the just-completed
\nvoyage to New York City indicate
\nthat her jams and jellies were among the
\nmost popular products carried aboard.<\/p>\n

Some teas from the Blu Tea Co., owned
\nby Mechanicville’s Nellie Ackerman, also
\nmade the trip, helping to highlight the
\nunique offerings available from Saratoga
\nCounty farmers and artisans.<\/p>\n
