In a city known for its upscale gourmet
\nrestaurants, the Barrel House, newly opened
\nat 68 Beekman St. in the Saratoga Springs
\nArts District, aims for a different vibe: A
\nneighborhood feel, welcoming the “typical
\nworking man” to come in and relax, according
\nto co-owner Tyler Kelly.<\/p>\n

The Barrel House opened July 11, following
\nthree months of decorating and furnishing
\nthe former Groggery. The previous tenants
\nremoved just about everything except the
\nbar and the hand-carved, circa 1860, statues
\nbehind the bar, Kelly said.<\/p>\n

Decor includes horse racing-related items
\nand Kelly’s father’s collection of old beer
\ncans. There are several television sets to
\nwatch sports. Other TVs are used as digital
\nsigns showing menu specials. There is also a
\nbarrel-top checkerboard.<\/p>\n

The name Barrel House, according to Kelly,
\nis a made-up name but, he noted, it is a term
\nused for southern bars near plantations that
\ncater to the plantation’s workers.<\/p>\n

Patrons order their food at the bar and
\nhave it brought out to their table, or get it
\npacked to take out. The restaurant can seat
\nabout 100, with additional space at picnic
\ntables and Adirondack chairs on a partially
\ncovered patio in the rear.<\/p>\n

Smoked meats are predominant on the
\nmenu. Barrel House smokes its own pork, turkey and chicken and gets the rest from
\nOscar’s Smokehouse in Warrensburg, the
\nowners said.<\/p>\n

Side dishes include macaroni salad, potato
\nsalad, and other “homemade, picnic-style”
\nside dishes, Kelly said. So far, the best sellers
\non the menu are the “three-meat treat,”
\na hamburger topped with pulled pork and
\nbacon, and the “pork barrel,” a pulled pork
\nsandwich, Kelly noted.<\/p>\n

There is also some lighter fare, including
\nsalads. Kelly said they try to use local produce
\nin their kitchen, buying from places like
\nSchoharie Valley Farms and Antonucci’s in
\nGloversville.<\/p>\n

If someone is not in the mood for a full
\nmeal, Barrel House offers snacks such as
\nchips and dips or cheese and crackers. The
\nbar offers 20 beers on draft, including several
\nlocal and regional beers, as well as wines and
\nhard liquor.<\/p>\n

So far, the staff consists of Kelly, his
\nco-owner, Charles Usas, and cook Dan Passamonte,
\nbut in late July they were about to
\nadd more staff as the business builds.
\n“Quite a few people are coming through to
\napply for jobs,” Kelly said.<\/p>\n

Barrel House is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.,
\nMonday through Saturday. Their telephone
