The previous tenants<br \/>\nremoved just about everything except the<br \/>\nbar and the hand-carved, circa 1860, statues<br \/>\nbehind the bar, Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>Decor includes horse racing-related items<br \/>\nand Kelly&#8217;s father&#8217;s collection of old beer<br \/>\ncans. There are several television sets to<br \/>\nwatch sports. Other TVs are used as digital<br \/>\nsigns showing menu specials. There is also a<br \/>\nbarrel-top checkerboard.<\/p>\n<p>The name Barrel House, according to Kelly,<br \/>\nis a made-up name but, he noted, it is a term<br \/>\nused for southern bars near plantations that<br \/>\ncater to the plantation&#8217;s workers.<\/p>\n<p>Patrons order their food at the bar and<br \/>\nhave it brought out to their table, or get it<br \/>\npacked to take out. The restaurant can seat<br \/>\nabout 100, with additional space at picnic<br \/>\ntables and Adirondack chairs on a partially<br \/>\ncovered patio in the rear.<\/p>\n<p>Smoked meats are predominant on the<br \/>\nmenu. Barrel House smokes its own pork, turkey and chicken and gets the rest from<br \/>\nOscar&#8217;s Smokehouse in Warrensburg, the<br \/>\nowners said.<\/p>\n<p>Side dishes include macaroni salad, potato<br \/>\nsalad, and other &#8220;homemade, picnic-style&#8221;<br \/>\nside dishes, Kelly said. So far, the best sellers<br \/>\non the menu are the &#8220;three-meat treat,&#8221;<br \/>\na hamburger topped with pulled pork and<br \/>\nbacon, and the &#8220;pork barrel,&#8221; a pulled pork<br \/>\nsandwich, Kelly noted.<\/p>\n<p>There is also some lighter fare, including<br \/>\nsalads. Kelly said they try to use local produce<br \/>\nin their kitchen, buying from places like<br \/>\nSchoharie Valley Farms and Antonucci&#8217;s in<br \/>\nGloversville.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is not in the mood for a full<br \/>\nmeal, Barrel House offers snacks such as<br \/>\nchips and dips or cheese and crackers. The<br \/>\nbar offers 20 beers on draft, including several<br \/>\nlocal and regional beers, as well as wines and<br \/>\nhard liquor.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the staff consists of Kelly, his<br \/>\nco-owner, Charles Usas, and cook Dan Passamonte,<br \/>\nbut in late July they were about to<br \/>\nadd more staff as the business builds.<br \/>\n&#8220;Quite a few people are coming through to<br \/>\napply for jobs,&#8221; Kelly said.<\/p>\n<p>Barrel House is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.,<br \/>\nMonday through Saturday.
