Walton’s Sport Shop, long a fixture on Lake
\nAvenue in Saratoga Springs, has moved away
\nfrom the downtown area to 640 Maple Ave.
\nWalton’s opened on Maple Avenue on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n

The Lake Avenue building will eventually
\nhouse Kane’s Fine Wines and Spirits. The interior
\nof the building is being renovated.
\nThe bigger space gives more room for his onsite
\nproduction. LeCours said business at Walton’s
\nthis far is ahead of last year’s numbers.<\/p>\n

He currently employs four full-time employees
\nand two part-timers. Because 75-80 percent
\nof orders come in by email and another 10
\npercent via phone, the loss of foot traffic from
\nthe downtown area is not much of an issue.<\/p>\n

The original location at 59 Lake Ave. opened
\nin 1929, primarily as a store for hunting and
\nfishing supplies. In 1974, Al Fairbanks bought
\nthe store from Bob Walton Jr. By 1978, with
\ncurrent owner Tom LeCours, the store was
\ncarrying a wide array of products for tennis,
\nhockey, soccer, and many other sports. It
\nbecame a place where athletes stopped in not
\nonly to buy equipment, but to have a tennis
\nracquet restrung, skates sharpened, and equipment
\nmaintained.<\/p>\n

LeCours bought the store in 1989. He said
\nshopping malls had arrived in Wilton and
\nprovided stiff competition for equipment sales.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Walton’s had begun providing
\nscreen printing and embroidery services for
\nsports teams, booster clubs. They provided
\nuniforms, event commemorative T-shirts,
\nballcaps, and a variety of other items.<\/p>\n

LeCours said initially, orders had been sent
\nout of the store to be imprinted or embroidered,
\nbut the quality of work was uneven and
\nthe timing of deliveries was less than ideal. Efforts
\nwere made to expand in-house production
\nof screenprint and embroidery products and
\nbusiness tripled two years in a row, he said.<\/p>\n

Merchandise sales and maintenance became smaller and smaller parts of Walton’s
\nbusiness and Walton’s became largely a production
\nbusiness trying to function in a retail
\nspace, said the owner.<\/p>\n

LeCours said a more retail-oriented business
\nmight benefit in the downtown location
\nwith 12 of its own parking spaces. But he
\nwanted to make sure it would be a tenant with
\nsolid business experience who would likely
\nstay in Saratoga for a long while.<\/p>\n

He knew of a family that owned a package
\nstore in Massachusetts for 25 years. He approached
\na member of the family, originally
\nfrom Saratoga about opening a store in the
\nLake Avenue location. An agreement was
\nstruck.<\/p>\n

For 10 years, Walton’s has handled Little
\nLeague uniform orders from 20 leagues, ranging
\nfrom north of Lake George to as far south
\nas Hoosick Falls and with an east-west range
\nfrom Greenwich to Galway. LeCours said he
\nis proud of never missing a deadline, even
\nif it means getting an order for uniforms on
\nMonday for a season that starts Friday of the
\nsame week.<\/p>\n

Besides big orders like Little Leagues or
\nYMCA basketball uniforms, Walton’s can accommodate
\norders for school teams or youth
\nprograms and even a small order of 10 shirts
\nto commemorate a family event. They also can
\nadd corporate logos to businesses’ uniforms.<\/p>\n

In addition to screen-printed and embroidered
\nproducts, Walton’s can use other methods
\nto apply writing and images onto clothing,
\nincluding a CAD-cut method and transfer
\napplications. LeCours said Walton’s strives
\nto find the best solution for each customer’s
\nneeds at the best price.<\/p>\n
