The Saratoga Springs Public Library will
\nstart a program to give people access to better
\nfinancial and investor information.<\/p>\n
The library was one of 17 public libraries
\nnationwide chosen through a competitive
\nprocess to receive a grant from the Financial
\nIndustry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor
\nEducation Foundation in partnership with
\nthe American Library Association (ALA) as part
\nof “Smart investing@your library” program.<\/p>\n
This grant will help to build the capacity of
\nthe library to provide effective, unbiased financial
\nand investor education to the community,
\nlibrary officials said.<\/p>\n
With the funding, the library will be offering
\na series of adult and teen financial workshops
\nthis fall that focus on various aspects of personal
\nfinance, such as small business planning,
\nthe basics of investing, repairing credit, and
\nretirement planning.<\/p>\n
The library will also use a portion of the
\nfunds to purchase updated library materials
\nand databases about finance and investing for
\nthe general collection.<\/p>\n
Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Finance
\nMichele Madigan, who also possesses a masters
\ndegree in library science was hired to administer
\nthe grant and is currently serving as the
\nlibrary’s financial literacy coordinator.<\/p>\n
“It’s an honor to receive this generous grant
\nfrom the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
\nThe funding will give the community access to free, unbiased financial information programs,” said reference librarian Jacquelyn
\nKowalczyk. “We’re excited by the prospect of
\ncollaborating in new ways with trusted community
\npartners to deliver information that
\nhelps people build a brighter financial future.”<\/p>\n
The Saratoga Springs Public Library will
\nbe working with a number of civic groups,
\nincluding SCORE (Service Corps of Retired
\nExecutives), and the Small Business Development
\nCenter in order to provide information to
\ndiverse audiences in the community.<\/p>\n
Two educational sessions were held in September.
\nThose to be held for the rest of 2014
\nas part of the program include: Customer
\nService Basics, Oct. 8; Branding 101, Nov. 5;
\nand Positioning for Growth, Dec. 10.<\/p>\n
“The libraries participating in this grant
\nprogram make reliable financial information
\nand education readily accessible in their communities,”
\nsaid Gerri Walsh, president of the
\nFINRA Foundation. “Libraries are paying close
\nattention to their communities’ needs and aspirations,
\nand can respond in creative, sustainable
\nways to help residents achieve financial
\ngoals for themselves and their families.”<\/p>\n
Smart investing@your library is a partnership
\nbetween the Reference and User Services
\nAssociation (RUSA), a division of the American
\nLibrary Association, and the FINRA Investor
\nEducation Foundation. The program supports
\npublic libraries across the country in their
\nefforts to meet financial education needs at
