“Advancing Women to the Top,” a research
\nstudy of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation,
\nwill be discussed by Roberta Zenn
\nPhillips, executive director of the Center for
\nWomen in Business of the U.S. Chamber of
\nCommerce, at the annual fall luncheon of
\nthe Women in Business Committee of the
\nChamber of Southern Saratoga County on Oct.
\n21 at the Century House in Latham.<\/p>\n
The study identified and analyzed 12
\nFortune 1000 companies that successfully
\nincluded women in their “top teams” and
\non their boards of directors to discover how
\nthey achieved that success and the impact
\non the company.<\/p>\n
The presence of women in those top positions
\nwas “good for women, good for business,
\nand vital to the economy,” said Phillips in
\nadvance of her trip to the area. She said the
\nreport concluded that “diverse thought matters”
\nand “companies do better with women
\nin high places.”<\/p>\n
Criteria for inclusion in the list of “best
\nperformers” included the presence of women
\nin more than 25 percent of executive roles
\nand more than 18 percent of board positions,
\naccording to 2011 data.<\/p>\n
Most of the companies are identified in
\nthe report, although some chose to remain
\nanonymous. The list is heavy with insurance
\nand health services companies.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Chamber’s Center for Women in
\nBusiness was founded in March 2012 at the
\ninitiative of then-CEO David Chabern. That
\nyear was also the 100th anniversary year of
\nthe Chamber.<\/p>\n
“We needed a program for women just
\nstarting out in the workforce, trying to get
\nahead in an organization, aspiring to corporate
\nleadership, and for new entrepreneurs
\nstarting the businesses of their dreams,”
\nPhillips said.<\/p>\n
Phillips, who lives in northern Virginia
\nand works at the Chamber’s headquarters in
\nWashington, D.C., said that she “loves New
\nYour state” and hopes that there will still be
\nsome fall foliage remaining when she makes
\nthe trip to Latham.<\/p>\n
The luncheon is from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30
\np.m. General admission is $60, with discounts
\nfor Chamber members or for corporate tables.
