The Geyser Road-Spa State Park Bicycle-
\nPedestrian Trail will see improvements thanks
\nto funding from New York state.<\/p>\n
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in October announced
\napproximately $70 million in awards
\nto fund 68 bicycle, pedestrian and multi-use
\npath transportation projects in New York. The
\nprojects, funded by the Federal Highway Administration
\nand which leverage a total investment
\nof $103.7 million, will promote walking
\nand biking, and boost tourism and economic
\ndevelopment opportunities in dozens of communities
\nacross the state.<\/p>\n
The state will provide $1.6 million for the
\nlocal project.<\/p>\n
The trail will link the Geyser Crest neighborhoods
\nand Grande Industrial Park to Saratoga
\nSpa State Park and the rest of the city. It will
\nrun approximately three miles, from the Milton
\ntown line to Route 50 near Saratoga Performing
\nArts Center.<\/p>\n
“These projects will help communities become
\nmore walkable and bicycle friendly, as
\nwell as show off the natural beauty that exists
\nin every corner of this state,” Cuomo said. “I
\nthank the Federal Highway Administration and
\nour representatives for helping the state secure
\nthis funding so that residents and visitors alike
\ncan enjoy New York like never before.”<\/p>\n
The projects include the addition of accessible
\nsidewalks, improved pedestrian access to
\npublic transportation services, construction of new bicycle and pedestrian facilities and
\nthe preservation and conversion of abandoned
\nrailroad corridors for trail use.<\/p>\n

\ninvesting in projects that meet the increasing
\npublic demand for walkable and bikeable communities,
\nwhile promoting sustainable transportation
\nalternatives, tourism and recreation,
\nand local and regional economic development.”<\/p>\n
The funds are made available to the state
\nthrough the Federal Highway Administration
\nand are administered by the State Department
\nof Transportation. The program provides up
\nto 80 percent of the cost of each project, with
\nthe remaining share coming from the project
\nsponsor. The funds are dedicated for strategic
\ninvestments in transportation alternatives and
\nwith a local sponsor match of more than $33.6
\nmillion, support a total investment of nearly
\n$103.7 million.<\/p>\n
The projects were chosen through a competitive
\nsolicitation process and rated on established
\ncriteria that included public benefit and
\ncommunity support for the project; connectivity
\nto an existing transportation system; how well
\nthe proposed improvements benefit walking
\nand bicycling; impact on local or regional
\neconomies; availability of matching funds; and
\nability to deliver the project within federally
\nrequired time frames. A total of 135 applications
