Broadway in Saratoga Springs became
\nhome to a new gift shop in October.
\nSamantha “Sam” McCullough opened
\nStinky Dog boutique at 488 Broadway, a
\ncouple of doors down from City Hall.<\/p>\n

Stinky offerings now include art, hats,
\ngreeting cards, jewelry, clothing and even
\nStinky soap and underwear.
\nShe said business thus far has been
\n“amazing.”<\/p>\n

Stinky Dog is a one-woman operation,
\nwith support from McCullough’s husband
\nand sons. The products are fashioned according
\nto the Stinky Dog theme that was
\ndeveloped in an odd fashion.<\/p>\n

McCullough said that growing up she
\nhad about 50 different addresses. She was
\nborn in England. Other homes included a
\nsailboat in San Francisco, a dorm house
\nin Yosemite National Park, the barrio in
\nLos Angeles, and a mansion in Newport
\nBeach, Ca.<\/p>\n

Later, she traveled in India and Nepal.
\nBack in the United States, she met the man
\nin Portland, Ore., who would become her
\nhusband. The man had a dog, rescued from
\nthe pound, that was inclined to activities
\nlike chewing buttons off from coats and
\nfrequently rolling in various odoriferous
\nsubstances, earning itself the nickname
\nof Stinky.<\/p>\n

When the man’s birthday arrived, McCullough was short of cash and, for a gift
\nchose to sew him an effigy of Stinky, fashioned
\nfrom a discarded tweed coat.<\/p>\n

For friends who were enchanted with
\nthe stuffed Stinky, McCullough began to
\nmake doodles and cartoons with the Stinky
\nimage. She said they convinced her that
\nshe could make money with her Stinky
\nart and she began to sell items with the
\nStinky image at the Portland Saturday
\nMarket in Orgeon, where Stinky Dog’s
\npopularity spread.<\/p>\n

McCullough and her family moved east
\nand settled in Northville, in nearby Fulton
\nCounty. She wanted to continue selling art,
\nbut she puzzled over how to create a lucrative
\nmarket for her goods in Northville. She
\nhad meanwhile started to produce t-shirts
\nwith a caped Super Stinky image.<\/p>\n

McCullough opened the Stinky Dog Co.
\nstore in Northville in 2007, but eventually
\nclosed the store. She said friends suggested
\nshe start selling Stinky goods on
\neBay, where sales were successful, but she
\nfound her house was becoming overrun
\nwith Stinky merchandise.<\/p>\n

It was suggested she try marketing
\nStinky Dog products at Saratoga’s Art in
\nthe Park. The Saratoga market seemed to
\nenjoy Stinky Dog, which lead to the development
\nof the Broadway store.<\/p>\n

The shop is closed Tuesdays. It is open
\nMonday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 10 a.m.
\nto 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday. 10 a.m. to
\n7 p.m. and Sundays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The
