This new picnic shelter with a 75-person capacity is part of improvements totaling $839,000 recently completed at Saratoga Spa State Park\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

New York state workers have completed
\nseveral projects in Saratoga Spa State Park
\nthat will increase overall access and recreation.<\/p>\n

The improvements, funded through NY
\nWorks, total $839,000 and include a new
\npicnic shelter with a 75-person capacity, a
\ncomfort station complex near the Peerless
\nPool, and a new one-mile bike and pedestrian
\ntrail within the park along Route 9\/South
\nBroadway.<\/p>\n

“Saratoga Spa State Park is one of New
\nYork’s most scenic outdoor locations, and
\nthese projects are reinforcing that reputation
\nby making the park even more enjoyable for
\nvisitors of all ages,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. .<\/p>\n

“By building on popular features and investing
\nin projects that will meet the needs of visitors
\ntoday and in the future, we’re creating a more
\nwelcoming park system for all New Yorkers.”<\/p>\n

The new Polaris picnic shelter, named after
\none of the park’s celebrated mineral springs,
\nis the ninth rentable picnic shelter at the
\npark. It is located near the Peerless swimming
\npool and playground, and the site also
\nfeatures a new comfort station, large brick fire
\npit, and is accessible for people with mobility
\nchallenges.<\/p>\n

“I am thrilled that these improvement projects
\nhave been made at Saratoga Spa State
\nPark” said Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne
\nYepsen. “These welcomed investments will
\nenhance our region’s recreation opportunities
\nand make our beloved state park even more
\nattractive and vibrant for many more years.”<\/p>\n

Completion of the trail along Route 9\/
\nSouth Broadway adds another mile of paved
\nbike-pedestrian trail to the park’s expansive
\nnetwork. The trail links East-West Road to
\nMarin Avenue, extending the existing trail
\nalong Route 9 from the Avenue of the Pines to
\nMarin Avenue, and creating a new trail loop
\nwithin the park.<\/p>\n

As part of the trail expansion project,
\nconstruction is also underway on the new
\nPeerless Loop trail, which will establish a
\nnearly one-mile paved off-road trail around
\nthe Peerless Pool complex, state officials
\nsaid. The Peerless Loop trail is expected to
\nbe completed in the spring.<\/p>\n

“Our popular Saratoga Spa picnic pavilions
\nbook up early, so we are pleased to offer a
\nnew option for family reunions, company
\noutings, birthday parties and other gatherings
\nin the park,” said State Parks Commissioner
\nRose Harvey. “And the new trail segment will
\nenhance the park’s friendliness for walking,
\nrunning and biking.”<\/p>\n

The park improvements were identified in
\na recent master plan for Saratoga Spa State
\nPark.<\/p>\n

Officials said the park improvements reflect
\na statewide revitalization of the park system.
\nUnder the NY Works program, there was $90
\nmillion in the 2014-2015 state budget for
\npark capital improvement projections. This
\ncommitment follows the last two years of the
\nNew York Works initiative, which allocated
\n$179 million in new capital funds. Together
\nwith additional leveraged funds, NY Works has
\nsupported a total of $421 million to advance
\n279 capital improvement projects at 109 parks
\nsince 2012, according to the governor’s office.<\/p>\n

Shelters are available for public rental
\nfrom May through mid-October. Applications
\nto be placed in a lottery to reserve the picnic
\nshelters will be accepted from Jan. 2 to Feb.
\n6. The daily rental fee is $200. Vehicle entry
\nto the park is not included. After the lottery
\ndeadline, applications will be honored on a
\nfirst-come first-serve basis. Call the park office
\nfor more information at 584-2535.<\/p>\n

New York State Office of Parks, Recreation
\nand Historic Preservation oversees 180 state
