The Saratoga Foundation for Innovative
\nLearning (SFIL) awarded seven grants to
\nfund innovative programming in the Saratoga
\nSprings City School District totaling almost
\n20,000. The grants were funded through donations
\nand proceeds from the event “Celebrate. Innovate.
\nEducate.” The grant recipients are:<\/p>\n
Colleen Belanger for geocaching in Physical
\nEducation in the amount of $3,470. The grant
\nwill allow Saratoga students the opportunity to
\nexplore geocaching and then work together to
\ncreate their own. Geocaching is a real-world,
\noutdoor game using GPS-enabled devices.<\/p>\n
Samantha Decker for iPads in Foreign
\nLanguage in the amount of $5,470. The grant
\nwill fund a set of iPads for the Maple Avenue
\nForeign Language Department. The iPads offer
\nlanguage students the opportunity to work
\ncreatively on projects in ways that are not
\npossible on computers.<\/p>\n
Judith Dorflinger and Dr. Greer Miller for
\nThe Little Passports Program in the amount
\nof $3,208.25. The grant will fund the purchase
\nLittle Passport Kits and supplies for the Little
\nPassports Program. The Little Passports program
\nwill celebrate Division Street Elementary
\nSchool’s diversity by developing an educational
\nprogram that fosters global awareness.<\/p>\n
Bridgette Gallagher and Damian Ubriaco for
\n“Our Saratoga Life” in the amount of $1,000.
\nThe grant will provide recording equipment
\nfor the project Our Saratoga Life. Students will
\nrecord podcasts and video podcasts that will
\nbecome publishable so that the school district
\nand community members can enjoy them.<\/p>\n
Michael Gallagher and Educating Young
\nEngineers (EYE) for the expansion of Educating
\nYoung Engineers in the amount of $1,000.
\nEYE held three sold-out Saturday engineering
\nprograms during the 2014-15 school year. The
\ngrant will help EYE expand their Saturday programming
\nby providing assistance to families
\nthat cannot afford program fees.<\/p>\n
Michael Gallagher and the Saratoga Inventor’s
\nClub for The Nitinol Heat Engine in the
\namount of $5,000. The grant will provide half
\nof the costs needed for the creation of a Nitinol
\nHeat Engine. Nitinol is a Nickel and Titanium
\nalloy which possesses special and unique properties
\nthat allow it to be trained to conform
\nto certain shapes at specific temperatures.<\/p>\n
Technology students will exploit these properties
\nfor the purpose of energy conversion in an
\neffort to develop a low cost, efficient, energy
\nproducing system.<\/p>\n
Mary Anne Fantauzzi for The IRIS Center of
\nSaratoga Springs High School in the amount
\nof $514.73. IRIS is an acronym for Immediate
\nReinforcement Increases Success. The grant
\nwill help the IRIS Center purchase and install
\nan interactive 27-foot by 6.5-foot chalkboard
\npainted wall to assist the teacher to be a mentor
\nand coach.<\/p>\n
