Selim Nahas describes has passion for
\ncreating facsimiles and translations of 15th
\nto 17th century written materials.<\/p>\n

“Some guys have a mid-life crisis and buy
\na fancy sports car,” he said. Instead of that,
\nNahas purchased one of the few available
\ncopies of Hartman Schedel’s 1493 “Nuremburg
\nChronicals” (“Liber Chronicarum” in
\nthe original Latin), an illustrated history
\nof the then-known world, from Creation to
\nSchedel’s times with a view forward to the
\nLast Judgment.<\/p>\n

Nahas, owner of Smith & Press, a press
\nspecializing in reproduction of early printed
\nmaterials, is by day an engineer at GlobalFoundries, so he’s well grounded in contemporary
\ntechnology. But with a degree in
\narchitecture and fine arts, he’s also interested
\nin the history of how people thought, and the
\ndevelopment of ideas over the years.<\/p>\n

Nahas has an interest in making this
\ninformation available to a wide variety of
\naudiences, not just the privileged few who
\nmight have access to the original texts and
\nthe ability to read them in the original Latin,
\nItalian, Greek or other language.<\/p>\n

Smith & Press, whose office is in Saratoga
\nSprings, specializes in translations & facsimiles
\nof 15th to 17th century books, with
\nlimited production runs. The translations
\nare primarily targeted for the research and
\nacademic community, and individual enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

Its translation of the “Nuremberg
\nChronicle 1493” now resides in more than 100
\ncolleges, universities and libraries worldwide.<\/p>\n

Nahas’ wife, Stacy Nahas, has a background
\nin finance. While the overall business plan for
\nSmith & Press may be Selim’s, the execution
\nof marketing, follow-up, and execution of the
\nplan, said Selim, belongs to Stacy, co-owner
\nof the business.<\/p>\n

The initial facsimile volume of “Liber
\nChronicarum” that Smith & Press produced is
\na testament to Selim’s passion for historically
\ncorrect detail. It is made with a hand-tooled
\nleather cover to match the original and well researched
\nreproduction fittings and clasps
\n(whose purposes were to reduce wear and
\ntear on the leather and pages).<\/p>\n

Only six copies were produced and are
\nno longer being sold. Due to the expense
\nof its production, it would not serve Selim’s
\npurpose of making ancient texts available to
\na general audience, nor would it lend itself
\nto a viable business plan.<\/p>\n

Smith & Press produces both facsimiles
\nand translations of early texts, including
\nLeonardo da Vinci’s “Leicester Codex,” complete
\nwith drawings and diagrams and Italian
\nmirror-writing, and “Fasciculus Medicinae,”
\nthe first known illustrated medical work,
\npublished in 1495.<\/p>\n

There are works of astrology and a highly
\nillustrated volume called “Metoposcopia,”
\nwhose author was convinced that the lines
\nin a person’s face told all about his or her
\ncharacter, and drew over 800 examples of
\nfaces with such lines.<\/p>\n

Nahas works with top-notch scholars
\non the translations. The work of each is
\nmuch edited by them, including discussion
\nof intended nuances of the original texts.<\/p>\n

Translations are printed face-to-face with
\nthe original text, for comparison by those who
\nread the language, and are heavily annotated.
\nSelim owns copyrights to all of his company’s
\ntranslations.<\/p>\n

\nSmith & Press.<\/p>\n
