A Saratoga Springs man has purchased Sylvan
\nLearning Inc., a provider of supplemental
\neducation for students in grades K-12.
\nPatrick McNamara is the owner\/operator
\nof the Capital Region’s Sylvan Learning
\nfranchise.<\/p>\n

McNamara, who assumes the title of executive
\ndirector, will oversee student educational
\nservices, human resources, advertising and
\nmarketing campaigns, and financial management
\nof the company.<\/p>\n

The business has offices in Albany and
\nClifton Park.
\nHe purchased the business from Catherine
\nHull who ran the regional franchise from 1995
\nto 2014.<\/p>\n

“I am thrilled to take over the reins of this
\nbusiness regionally,” said McNamara, a former
\nentertainment lawyer who recently relocated
\nto Saratoga Springs from New York City. “It’s
\nan exciting and challenging time to be working
\nin the field of education. With the improvement
\nof the national economy, the on-going
\ngrowth of Albany’s economy, the challenges
\nof the Common Core, and Sylvan’s national
\nreputation and introduction of SylvanSync
\n— a new teaching platform that incorporates
\ntraditional face-to-face tutoring with the latest
\ndigital technology — I knew this was right
\ntime to purchase this business.<\/p>\n

“Sylvan is the most recognizable name in
\ntutoring, and I am fortunate to be able to retain
\nSylvan’s experienced staff and build on its 20-
\nyear history of helping families in the Capital
\nRegion,” he added.<\/p>\n

Founded in 1979 and with more than 800 locations
\nnationwide, Sylvan’s programs include
\nmath, reading, writing, study skills, and test
\nprep for SAT, ACT and Regent’s exams, as well as traditional homework help. State-certified
\nteachers use interactive technology to help
\nstudents gain the confidence they need to
\nimprove their grades. Programs, which are
\noffered to students attending both public and
\nprivate schools, are personalized to meet the
\nneeds of each child.<\/p>\n

Prior to his current position, McNamara
\npracticed law for 29 years, providing general
\nbusiness representation to individuals and companies
\nwith a particular emphasis on clients in
\nthe entertainment industry.<\/p>\n

He has a B.A. from the University of Rochester
