John DeMarco sees an addition to his
\ncompany’s building as the key to reaching
\n$20 million in sales within the next
\nfive years.<\/p>\n

DeMarco and his son, Robert DeMarco,
\nfounded AgroChem, a Saratoga Springs
\ncompany that develops and manufactures
\nsanitizing products for farms and dairies,
\nabout 10 years ago.<\/p>\n

Today, the company occupies 30,000
\nsquare feet at 3 Duplainville Road in the
\nGrande Industrial Park. It employs 26
\npeople and does $15 million a year in sales
\nto customers all over the world, according
\nto the owners.<\/p>\n

But AgroChem needs room to grow, say
\nthe owners.<\/p>\n

The company went before the city Planning
\nBoard on Jan. 14, seeking permission
\nto expand its building by 5,000 square feet.
\nDeMarco said the project passed the initial
\nscreening phase and should be up for
\nenvironmental review in February.<\/p>\n

“I am being told that if everything runs
\nsmoothly, the project will be completed by
\nSeptember or October,” he said.
\nThe expansion will provide room for
\nautomation and new offices.<\/p>\n

“More than anything else we need the
\nbuilding updated,” DeMarco said. “It’s a
\n24-year-old building and it needs to be
\nupdated so we can automate the mixing
\nof all of the products and put on a second
\nshift.”<\/p>\n

He said automating and adding a shift
\nare key to propelling the company to $20
\nmillion in sales in five years or less.
\n“We have a demand, we just need to put
\nthe product out the door,” he said.<\/p>\n

The company has some new products
\nunder development, including peracetic
\nacid, an organic replacement for chlorine.
\nDeMarco said innovation is one of the
\nfactors driving AgroChem’s growth.<\/p>\n

“We are looked upon as the innovators
\nin the industry,” he said. “We’ve come up
\nwith products that solve problems in the
\nindustry that some larger companies have overlooked.
\n“Almost everything we manufacture
\nwe try to improve upon what is already
\nout there in the marketplace. In fact, we
\nreceive calls from other manufacturers
\nabout how some of our products are made.”<\/p>\n

AgroChem holds patents in the United
\nStates, New Zealand and Canada for Heal-
\nMax, a product that stops the progression
\nof an epidemic bacterial infection on the
\nhoofs of cows.
\nIt also is seeking patents on HealMax
\nin Japan and Europe.<\/p>\n

The company has seven sales offices
\nacross the country, including California,
\nMichigan, Montana and other states with
\nlarge dairy production and has been
\nincreasing its efforts to sell its products
\ninternationally.<\/p>\n

“We do quite a bit of business at this
\ntime in Canada,” DeMarco said. “We ship
\nfull container loads to Japan, multiple
\ncontainers at a time to Russia, Belarus,
\nKorea, and throughout Europe and the
\nUnited Kingdom.”<\/p>\n

The company has made arrangements to
\nuse other space in the Grande Industrial
\nPark while the construction is taking
\nplace, so that it will be able to keep up
\nwith production and get orders out the
\ndoor, DeMarco said.<\/p>\n

AgroChem expects to add four or five
\nnew employees as result of the expansion,
\nincluding chemical operators who
\nmix products.<\/p>\n

DeMarco said the positions come with
\nhigher pay than most warehouse jobs in
\nthe market, and benefits that include a
\n401k and health insurance.<\/p>\n

AgroChem started in the Grande Industrial
\nPark in about 5,000 square feet leased
\nfrom Slack Chemical Co. According to the
\nowners, it quickly outgrew that space and
\nmoved into one of three attached buildings
\nat 3 Duplainville Road in Saratoga Springs.
\nThe company said over time, it took over
\nall three buildings. The company also has
\nfive warehouse locations throughout the
