A state plan calls for improvements to the Victorian Pool complex in Spa State Park\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

New York state announced plans on March
\n2 to transform its aging system of public
\nparks and historic sites.
\nState Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey
\nsaid the state will invest $900 million by the
\nend of the decade to upgrade facilities and
\nreplace crumbling infrastructure.<\/p>\n

She outlined the NY Parks 2020 plan,
\nwhich will reverse years of decline in the
\nstate park system, she said.
\nThe program is a multiyear commitment
\nto leverage private and public funding to
\nimprove 180 parks and 35 historic sites. The
\ntotal includes $110 million in capital spending
\non parks in the proposed state budget for
\n2015-16, an increase of $20 million over the
\ncurrent fiscal year.<\/p>\n

In a new release, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said
\nNew York state is home to some of the best
\noutdoor recreation areas in the nation. The
\nplan “is building on our state’s recent success
\nin developing our parks and historic
\nsites into local economic engines, and it will
\nposition New York state as a top recreation
\ndestination for years to come.”<\/p>\n

The investment is making possible a diverse range of projects at the Saratoga Spa
\nState Park- including newly paved trails;
\nrestored picnic pavilions; improvements of
\nthe Victoria Pool complex; a new playground; availa
\nmore sustainable upgrade of the Saratoga
\nPerforming Arts gateway and preservation
\nof the historic Lincoln and Roosevelt Bathhouses.<\/p>\n

This multi-year NY Parks 2020 plan will
\nmodernize and bring state parks to 21st
\ncentury standards by:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Making comprehensive investments
\nin the State’s most popular flagship parks
\nsuch as Saratoga Spa, Niagara Falls and
\nJones Beach to ensure they remain relevant
\nthroughout the 21st Century.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Targeting investments to projects that
\npromote healthy, active outdoor recreation;<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Ensuring people from all walks of life
\nhave opportunities to connect with parks.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Replacing well used but worn out public
\nuse facilities and critical infrastructure that
\nhave been neglected too long.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Preserving historic sites and cultural
\nassets.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Ensuring proper stewardship of some of
\nthe State’s most unique ecosystems, including
\nmaking them more resilient to extreme
\nweather.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Leveraging the tourism impact of state
\nparks to energize local economies.<\/p>\n

The plan lays out the framework for how
\nState Parks will achieve these seven strategic
\npriorities, including:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Build and improve new recreational
\nfacilities such as playgrounds, athletic fields
\nand swimming facilities.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Open under-utilized parkland and reconnect
\nchildren to the outdoors by building new
\nnature centers.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Modernize and refurbish campgrounds
\nand cabins, bathhouses, contact stations and
\npicnic pavilions.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Preserve and improve historic buildings
\nby repairing roofs and windows and restoring
\nhistoric stonework.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Undertake projects that prevent the invasive
\nspecies, improve storm resiliency and
\nimplement energy efficiency initiatives that
\nmake state parks a model of sustainability.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Develop partnerships that enhance visitor
\nservices such as restaurants and cultural
\nfacilities and host more recreational and
\ncultural events that promote New York’s
\ntourism assets; those destinations, three of
\nthe most popular in the state system, along
\nwith scores of other state-run recreational
\nproperties.<\/p>\n

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and
\nHistoric Preservation oversees 180 state
\nparks and 35 historic sites, which are visited
\nby more than 62 million people annually. For
