I couldn&#8217;t do it<br \/>\nwithout Maddy [Zanetti, a longtime employee]<br \/>\nand Dave and our whole staff. They<br \/>\nmake coming to work every day enjoyable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The business started as a screen printing<br \/>\nstore, and eventually evolved into the retail<br \/>\nlocation that people know as Impressions<br \/>\ntoday.<\/p>\n<p>Impressions considers itself the &#8220;everything<br \/>\nSaratoga&#8221; store, and has a wide<br \/>\nselection of Saratoga-themed merchandise<br \/>\nfor sale. Souvenirs and collectibles such<br \/>\nas mugs, jewelry, artwork, clothing, pet<br \/>\nsupplies, and more can all be found within<br \/>\nthe store.<\/p>\n<p>For the summer tourist, Impressions<br \/>\noffers souvenirs. For Saratoga residents, it<br \/>\noffers gifts for friends and family members.<br \/>\nBarker sources products from trade shows<br \/>\nand local craftspeople. Approximately half<br \/>\nof the products in the store have been custom<br \/>\nmade for Impressions, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from running Impressions, Barker<br \/>\nis busy with many other projects. She is a<br \/>\nmember of the Saratoga County Chamber<br \/>\nof Commerce and is a member of the retail<br \/>\ntask force committee. She was appointed<br \/>\nby the mayor to be a member of the city&#8217;s<br \/>\nSpecial Assessments District for downtown.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, she has served with the<br \/>\nSaratoga Convention &amp; Tourism Bureau.<br \/>\nShe believes in getting involved to change<br \/>\nthings in the city for the better.<br \/>\n&#8220;You get what you give. You can&#8217;t just sit<br \/>\naround and complain about it,&#8221; said Barker.<\/p>\n<p>She said being a woman in business<br \/>\nis challenging, but it is a easier to own a<br \/>\nbusiness today than it was 20 years ago for<br \/>\nwomen. In many ways, Barker said, it is an advantage rather than an obstacle to be<br \/>\novercome.<br \/>\nIn her spare time, she enjoys traveling,<br \/>\nriding horses and playing with her dogs.<\/p>\n<p>One of the features that Impressions is<br \/>\nwell known for is its friendliness toward<br \/>\nanimals. Barker and Zanetti bring their<br \/>\ndogs into work each day. The dogs even have<br \/>\nblogs that can be followed online. Likewise,<br \/>\nthe staff encourages customers to bring<br \/>\ntheir dogs into the shop. Impressions has<br \/>\na large amount of items for dog lovers and<br \/>\nowners, as well as equine items to represent<br \/>\nthe horse community in Saratoga Springs.<\/p>\n<p>Currently Impressions of Saratoga is<br \/>\ngeared up for the Saratoga Springs centennial<br \/>\ncelebration. There will be items in the<br \/>\nstore to commemorate the event, including<br \/>\nmugs, pins, magnets, and more. Impressions will be selling a commemorative coin<br \/>\nas well.<\/p>\n<p>Last year the store launched The Dark<br \/>\nHorse, its own brand within the store, which<br \/>\nincludes clothing, ceramics, gifts and more.<br \/>\nThe mascot for the label is a miniature<br \/>\nhorse, Upset, that makes appearances at<br \/>\nImpressions and events around Saratoga<br \/>\nSprings.<\/p>\n<p>For women who are looking to start a<br \/>\nbusiness, Barker advises &#8220;Be prepared to<br \/>\nput in very long hours, lots of energy and<br \/>\ntake care of yourself. It takes a lot of hard<br \/>\nwork.&#8221; Building a mentoring and support<br \/>\nnetwork is very important.<\/p>\n<p>Impressions of Saratoga is open from 10<br \/>\na.m. to 6 p.m. during the winter.
