Current Adirondack Flames and future<br \/>\nAdirondack Thunder President Brian Petrovek<br \/>\nunveiled the new name, logo and color scheme<br \/>\nto the public, beginning a new chapter of<br \/>\nprofessional hockey in Glens Falls and the<br \/>\nAdirondack region.<\/p>\n<p>The new team is part of the East Coast<br \/>\nHockey League.<\/p>\n<p>The move preserves professional hockey at<br \/>\nthe Glens Falls Civic Center amid significant<br \/>\nchanges in the American Hockey League, that<br \/>\ncontains the Adirondack Flames, who currently<br \/>\nreside in the Glens Falls Civic Center. The<br \/>\nAdirondack Flames are also owned by the NHL<br \/>\nCalgary organization.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Thunder brand has become a fixture in<br \/>\nthe ECHL and we are excited to be able to bring<br \/>\nthat tradition into the Glens Falls market,&#8221;<br \/>\nPetrovek said. &#8220;Keeping the colors that the Calgary<br \/>\nFlames brought to Glens Falls last spring<br \/>\ngives us consistency throughout the Calgary<br \/>\nFlames organization and we&#8217;re thrilled with the<br \/>\nnew look to begin play next year. New leagues<br \/>\ncall for a fresh, new and bold start and the<br \/>\nThunder brand does that at a very high level.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Adirondack Flames and four other<br \/>\nteams are moving to California to create a new<br \/>\nPacific Division of the AHL.<\/p>\n<p>At a Jan. 30 press conference announcing<br \/>\nthe three-year agreement, Daniel J. Burke,<br \/>\npresident of the nonprofit community coalition<br \/>\nwhich assumed control of the Civic Center from<br \/>\nthe city of Glens Falls on Jan. 1, said it achieved<br \/>\ntwo important goals, &#8220;retaining professional<br \/>\nhockey and moving the Civic Center toward<br \/>\ngreater financial stability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We worked hard to secure a three-year<br \/>\ncommitment on terms that were financially sustainable,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Burke. &#8220;For our volunteer board,<br \/>\nthis is a good first step but only a beginning.<br \/>\nWe will continue working, with the support of<br \/>\nthe community, to bring the Civic Center to its<br \/>\nfull potential.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is great fan support and a tremendous<br \/>\ntradition of hockey in the Glens Falls area, and<br \/>\nwe are delighted to continue to be a part of it,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Brian Burke, president of hockey operations<br \/>\nfor the Calgary Flames.<\/p>\n<p>The ECHL team in Glens Falls will become<br \/>\nthe market&#8217;s first team in that league, following<br \/>\n26 seasons in the American Hockey League and<br \/>\nseven seasons in the United Hockey League.<\/p>\n<p>The Thunder will become the sixth professional<br \/>\nhockey team to call Glens Falls home, joining<br \/>\nthe AHL&#8217;s Adirondack Red Wings, Adirondack<br \/>\nPhantoms and Adirondack Flames, along<br \/>\nwith the UHL&#8217;s Adirondack Ice Hawks and<br \/>\nAdirondack Frostbite.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Glens Falls has a long and storied tradition<br \/>\nof professional hockey,&#8221; ECHL Commissioner<br \/>\nBrian McKenna said at the Jan. 30 session. &#8220;The<br \/>\ncity fits well within our geography. We welcome<br \/>\nthe Flames&#8217; ownership of the team and look<br \/>\nforward to working with their organization<br \/>\nand the local coalition to continue that hockey<br \/>\ntradition.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, Glens Falls reached an agreement<br \/>\nwith Calgary to place its AHL affiliate team in<br \/>\nGlens Falls, with a provision in the contract<br \/>\nthat allowed the team to leave after one season.<\/p>\n<p>The new three\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nyear contract commits the Calgary<br \/>\norganization to keeping its ECHL affiliate<br \/>\nin Glens Falls for the full term.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We appreciate Calgary&#8217;s confidence in our<br \/>\ncommunity and their three-year<br \/>\ncommitment,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Peter Aust, president of the Adirondack<br \/>\nRegional Chamber of Commerce. &#8220;Our region<br \/>\ncan&#8217;t control decisions made on a national<br \/>\nlevel, but our positive support of hockey certainly<br \/>\nhad an impact on Calgary&#8217;s decision to<br \/>\nmaintain professional hockey here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ECHL Stockton Thunder averaged 4,438<br \/>\nfans per game, officials said.
