Attorney Tammy Arquette first became interested
\nin family law when she was 11 years old
\nand her parents began caring for foster children
\nand, a little later, adopted a child. She observed
\nthem dealing with the legal system, went with
\nthem to court and, as a result, she decided that,
\nwhen she grew up, she wanted to be an attorney
\nrepresenting children.<\/p>\n

As a law student at Albany Law School in the
\nlate 1980s, she interned at a law guardian back-up
\ncenter, a source of legal research and assistance
\nfor attorneys appointed as law guardians. Jack
\nCarter, her boss at the center, later became the
\nperson responsible for appointing law guardians
\nstatewide.<\/p>\n

Although she never did practice as a law
\nguardian, Arquette’s law practice for the past
\n24 years has concentrated on matrimonial and
\nfamily law.<\/p>\n

She began as an associate with Paul Calahan in
\nhis small general practice law firm in Duanesburg,
\ndoing a little bit of everything. She found that
\npractice a good background for family practice
\nwith its aspects of real estate, criminal, commercial
\nand other types of law. From there, she went
\nto a large matrimonial law firm for several years.<\/p>\n

In December 2009, she opened the Arquette
\nLaw Firm in Clifton Park. She calls it a “matrimonial
\nand family law firm that also does other
\ngeneral practice.”<\/p>\n

She estimates that 80 percent of the practice is
\nin the family and matrimonial area; the rest covers
\nthe gamut of real estate, bankruptcy, vehicle
\nand traffic, and other areas of law. Her associate,
\nAlexandra Buckley, also does matrimonial and
\nfamily law and some general practice and is also
\nadmitted to practice in Federal Court.<\/p>\n

Arquette said she never really experienced
\nany problems in her professional life because
\nshe is a woman. She practices in an area of the
\nlaw where there are many female practitioners
\nand some female judges, she noted. Most of her
\nwork is in the Capital District, primarily Saratoga,
\nSchenectady and Albany counties.<\/p>\n

Now that her children are both in their 20’s,
\nArquette feels free to work long hours, usually
\nsix days a week.
\n“I always take Sunday off,” she said.<\/p>\n
