Application for the Leadership Saratoga
\nClass of 2015-16 is open, with a deadline for
\ncompleted applications and four brief interviews
\nset at 5 p.m. Friday, May 29.<\/p>\n
It will be the 30th class of the program.
\nThe program is designed to orient and
\ntrain people who are interested in becoming
\nmore involved in their community in
\nvolunteer leadership capacities. In addition,
\nparticipants will receive in-depth knowledge
\nabout some of the critical issues facing
\nSaratoga County.<\/p>\n
A maximum of 24 people will be selected
\nby members of the Leadership Saratoga Advisory
\nBoard to participate in the 2015-16 class.<\/p>\n
The selection committee will be looking for
\nparticipants with a diversity of backgrounds
\nand geographic representation, as well as applicants
\nwho have demonstrated an interest
\nand involvement in their community.<\/p>\n
Organizers say Leadership Saratoga graduates
\nhave been making a positive impact
\non organizations, schools and communities
\nthroughout Saratoga County since the program’s
\ninception in 1985.<\/p>\n
The courses, which begin with a retreat
\non Sept. 13 – 14, will cover topics such as
\nworking with various leadership styles, keys
\nto effective board governance, strategic communications
\nand strategic planning, fund
\nraising and dealing with ethical dilemmas.<\/p>\n
Additional courses will address issues facing
\ncounty government, economic development
\nand quality of life, educational policy
\nmaking and more.<\/p>\n
“There are fourteen half-day sessions,
\nwith experiential learning, panel discussions,
\nrole-playing and candid dialogues with
\nmany of the county’s newsmakers,” said to
\nKathleen Fyfe, vice president of community
\ndevelopment for the Saratoga County Chamber
\nof Commerce and program director of
\nLeadership Saratoga.<\/p>\n
The Chamber sponsors Leadership
\nSaratoga, but participants do not need to be
\na member of the Chamber.<\/p>\n
Currently, graduates serve on the boards of
\ndirectors of over 60 non-profit organizations
\nfrom Clifton Park to Corinth, and volunteer
\nfor more than 100 additional organizations,
\nschools, religious institutions and youth
\nsports programs annually. Over 60 Leadership
\nSaratoga alumni have been elected or
\nappointed to local boards of education, town
\nboards, city councils, the county Board of
\nSupervisors, the county Planning Board, and
\nvarious other municipal committees.<\/p>\n
Fourteen have been hired in government related
\nappointed positions. There are more
\nthan 500 alums from the program.<\/p>\n
Charles Wait Jr., a graduate of the class
\nof 2012 and executive vice president at the
\nAdirondack Trust Co., said the program “provided
\nme with a much deeper understanding
\nof how our local communities work and greatly enhanced my connections to local
\norganizations working to better our communities.
\nAs a Leadership Saratoga student
\nI had the privilege of working and bonding
\nwith a great group of intelligent, active and
\ncommunity-minded individuals.”<\/p>\n
Leadership Saratoga is seeking candidates
\nwho are concerned about the future of the
\ncounty and demonstrate the interest and
\nskills to provide leadership in community
\nservice. All participants must live in Saratoga
\nCounty (or demonstrate a strong volunteer
\ninvolvement in the county) and must agree
\nto attend at least 80 percent of the sessions.
\nCost of the program is $1,250.<\/p>\n
Tuition assistance is available on a need
\nbasis and is provided by the Linda G. Toohey
\nLeadership Saratoga Alumni Association
\nScholarship Fund, named after the program
\nfounder.<\/p>\n
