Shelly Walker, the owner of Finishing
\nTouches Home Decor Inc., said it was not
\nuntil later in life that she decided to follow
\na career dream that took her back to the
\nSaratoga area.<\/p>\n

After studying in California, Walker
\ndecided to return to her hometown and
\ngo after her true passion. Now, after years
\nworking in the interior design field, working
\nfor others, and learning a lot along the way,
\nWalker has opened the doors to her own full
\nservice design business.<\/p>\n

“I got started in the interior design
\nfield about 18 years ago when I decided
\nto change careers and go into something
\nmore creative,” said Walker. “I have always
\nloved decorating and wanted to take it to a
\nhigher level. I moved to California to go to
\nschool on the west coast but returned to my
\nhometown to be with family. After working in
\na few different retail\/interior design stores,
\nI decided to start my own interior design
\nbusiness.”<\/p>\n

She said Finishing Touches Home Decor
\nis different from simply hiring an interior
\nand exterior designer. Walker’s business
\noffers services from room restyling, using
\nthe existing furniture and accessories, to
\nfull service interior design. She is also a
\nmerchandiser, offering home decorative
\nitems and gifts.<\/p>\n

“Anyone who is updating any part of
\ntheir home and would like some unique
\nitems can stop in and find something for
\nthemselves or a great gift for a friend or
\nfamily member,”said Walker.<\/p>\n

Walker said she thought a lot about where
\nto start a business, and the Saratoga area
\nseemed like the perfect choice.<\/p>\n

“I have always wanted a home decor store
\nof my own as I love merchandising as much
\nas interior design so last year I started
\nlooking for a location. I have always loved
\nthe area, from the people to the restaurants
\nto all of the art and history, so it was a
\nperfect place to open a home decor store,”
\nsaid Walker.<\/p>\n

Convenience and ample parking were a
\nfactor. Walker said, “The location at 217
\nBallard Road in Wilton just off Exit 16 met
\nthose needs.”<\/p>\n

Finshing Touches Home Decor provides
\nproducts such as: artwork mirrors, frames,
\npillows, bedding, tableware, florals, plants,
\narea rugs, candles, lamps, accessories,
\nfurniture and of course we offer interior
\ndesign services.<\/p>\n

Walker’s mother is the main reason she
\nbecame involved in the business.<\/p>\n

“As a child I would always want to change
\nthe color of my bedroom,” said Walker. “Well,
\nwith that comes new bedding, new window
\ntreatments. She would let me paint, then
\nhand-sew the things I needed to complete
\nthe remodel. She taught me how to make my
\nown floral wreaths and accessories. I have
\nloved it ever since.”<\/p>\n

Walker earned her degree at the
\nInterior Design Institute in Newport
\nBeach, California. She has over 18 years of
\nexperience in the design field along with a
\ndegree in accounting.<\/p>\n

Walker has participated in the Saratoga
\nBuilders Association Showcase of Homes and
\nthe Capital Region Builders & Remodelers
\nAssociation Parade of Homes, winning
\nawards in both. Her work has also been
\nfeatured on “Trading Spaces” on the TLC
\ntelevision station.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t pursue this career until later in
\nlife, first starting out of college on a different
\ncareer path, but it just goes to show, never
