The Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge 161 will
\nhold its 47th annual Flag Day Parade on
\nSaturday, June 13, as well as conduct a Flag
\nDay celebration at noon Sunday, June 14, at
\nthe lodge.<\/p>\n
The parade will honor all Vietnam Era
\nVeterans. Veterans wishing to march in the
\nparade should arrive at North Broadway and
\nEast Ave 11-11:30 a.m. Saturday. The parade
\nbegins at noon and extends from North Broadway
\nto Congress Park.<\/p>\n
The lodge ceremony Sunday–at 1 Elks
\nLane, Saratoga Springs, off Maple Avenue–
\nwill be held outside at the group’s flag pole,
\nfollowed at 1 p.m. by a picnic to honor local
\nveterans. At that event, grants will be presented
\nto the men’s home and the guardian
\nhouse.<\/p>\n
Each Elks Lodge is required to conduct a
\nservice annually on June l4, the anniversary
\nof the birth of the American Flag.<\/p>\n
The organization said the idea of a Flag
\nDay Service was first suggested to the Elks
\nby the then grand exalted ruler at the 1907
\nGrand Lodge Session in Philadelphia. The
\n1911 Grand Lodge Session at Atlantic City
\nmade the observance of Flag Day mandatory
\nfor subordinate lodges.<\/p>\n
It was not until Aug. 3, 1949, the United
\nStates designated June 14 as Flag Day.
