Currently, the U.S. dollar is pumped-up and
\npowerful. But what does a strong dollar mean
\nto you, as an investor?<\/p>\n

To begin with, it’s important to understand
\njust what is meant by a “strong” dollar. The U.S.
\ndollar does not exist in a vacuum — its value,
\nfrom a global perspective, is determined by
\nits changing strength relative to that of other
\ncurrencies. Let’s look at an example: Suppose
\nthat, in 2011, you traveled to Europe and wanted
\nto trade in one dollar for its equivalent value
\nin euros.<\/p>\n

At that time, your dollar would have converted
\nto about .75 of a euro. Fast forward to
\nearly 2015; if you returned to Europe now, your
\ndollar would fetch you almost one full euro. In
\nother words, you can buy more euros because
\nthe dollar is “stronger.”<\/p>\n

In fact, earlier this year, the euro hit a 12-year
\nlow versus the dollar. And it isn’t just the euro;
\nthe dollar is strong against almost every other
\nmajor currency in the world. What has led to
\nthis strength? It’s not always easy to determine
\nwhat’s behind foreign exchange rates — which
\ncan fluctuate even more than the stock market
\n— but the recent surge in the dollar seems to
\nbe due, at least in part, to its obvious connection
\nto the American economy, which has been
\ngrowing faster than many other economies
\naround the world.<\/p>\n

The stronger dollar is also due to expectations
\nthat interest rates will remain higher in
\nthe U.S. than in many other countries.<\/p>\n

But whatever the reasons for it, the dollar’s
\nstrength may be having an impact on your
\ninvestments. A strengthening dollar typically
\nlowers returns from international investments
\nbecause you get fewer dollars in exchange for
\nthe value in euros or other foreign currencies.
\nAnd some U.S. companies with a global presence
\nmay face challenges due to lower earnings
\nfrom their international operations.<\/p>\n

These results might lead you to think that a
\nstrong dollar would be bad news for the stock
\nmarket, but that hasn’t been the case in the
\npast. At different times, the markets have
\nperformed well with both a strong and a weak
\ndollar.<\/p>\n

In contrast to its impact on U.S. companies,
\na strong dollar can help foreign companies
\ncompete and may give them an earnings boost
\nfrom their U.S. sales. Also, the stronger dollar
\ncan help make foreign investments “cheaper.”<\/p>\n

Even more importantly, by taking advantage of
\nthe stronger dollar and investing an appropriate
\namount internationally, gaining exposure
\nto different economies and markets, you can
\nhelp diversify your holdings, which is important.
\nAlthough diversification can’t guarantee a profit
\nor always protect against loss, it can help reduce
\nthe impact of volatility on your portfolio. Be
\naware, though, that international investing carries
\nspecial risks beyond currency fluctuations,
\nincluding political and economic instability.<\/p>\n

The strong dollar may have attracted your
\nattention, but don’t be distracted by it — and
\ndon’t overreact. Currency exchange rates can
\nfluctuate rapidly, and no one can predict how
\nlong a strong dollar environment will last. By
\nsticking with a solid, long-term investment
\nstrategy, you can help keep up the “strength”
\nof your own dollars.<\/p>\n
