After more than 40 years of caring for area
\nseniors, Fort Hudson Health System, a nonprofit
\nsenior care organization, has plans for a $6 million
\nrenovation and modernization of its centerpiece
\nFort Hudson Nursing Center on Routes 4 in Fort
\nEdward.<\/p>\n

Fort Hudson Nursing Center is the region’s
\nonly privately operated nonprofit nursing center
\nand the largest skilled nursing facility in Warren,
\nWashington and northern Saratoga counties, at
\n196 beds. In 1996, the facility became the first in
\nthe area to offer a specialized care environment
\nfor people living with Alzheimer’s disease, the
\nSandy Hill Pavilion, supported by the Sandy Hill
\nFoundation, officials said.<\/p>\n

In addition to the 24-hour skilled nursing
\ncenter, Fort Hudson offers short-term rehabilitation,
\nhome health care, medical and social adult
\ndaycare programs, care coordination and retirement
\nsenior housing.<\/p>\n

The center announced it is already more than
\nhalfway toward the goal of raising $1.5 million in
\ncommunity donations for the project.
\nChief Executive Officer Andrew Cruikshank
\nsaid more than $800,000 in community donations
\nwas committed during the “quiet phase” of
\na fundraising effort.<\/p>\n

Leading the way with contributions are
\nthe Charles R. Wood Foundation with a gift of
\n$250,000, and the Sandy Hill Foundation and the David S. & Janet R. Sheridan Foundation with
\ngifts of $200,000 each. Other major donors include
\nGlens Falls National Bank, Stewart’s Shops, The
\nGlens Falls Foundation and Cool Insuring Agency.
\nFort Hudson is now launching a region-wide
\ncapital campaign, entitled “Getting Better With
\nAge,” in hopes of raising an additional $700,000
\nfor the project.<\/p>\n

“This project is all about providing the best
\nquality of life for Fort Hudson’s residents, the
\nbest visiting experience for families and friends,
\nand the best care environment for our caregivers,”
\nCruikshank said. “As with any 40-year-old home,
\nthe time has come to upgrade and enhance our
\namenities, infrastructure and technology to provide
\nnew levels of comfort and enjoyment.<\/p>\n

“We are extremely honored and grateful that
\nthree of our region’s most respected and generous
\nbenefactors have stepped forward to help us
\nin such a significant way. The Charles R. Wood
\nFoundation, the Sandy Hill Foundation and the
\nSheridan Foundation are among the greatest
\nfriends our seniors could ask for.”<\/p>\n

Among the many elements of the modernization,
\nFort Hudson plans to:<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Transform four dining rooms to provide
\na more comfortable, home-like setting, and
\nimproved opportunities for activities and socialization.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Create a new, more inviting lobby and gathering
\nplace for residents, families and friends.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Construct a new main entrance with a
\ncovered portico to shelter arriving residents and
\nguests from the elements.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Replace furnishings in many areas throughout
\nthe facility, and make a wide variety of
\ninfrastructure improvements, including new air
\nhandling units and new elevators.<\/p>\n

“The skilled medical care and personal attention
\ngiven to the residents of Fort Hudson are second
\nto none, and this project will bring the quality
\nof our facilities and technology to the next level,
\nas well,” said Gretchen Steffan, president of the
\nboard of directors of Fort Hudson Health System.<\/p>\n

“We are pleased to partner with our regional
\ncommunity to continue Fort Hudson’s proud
\ntradition of care.”<\/p>\n

Established in 1969, Fort Hudson Health System
\nis the region’s leading provider of senior care services inside and outside the home.
\n“Fort Hudson is one of our region’s greatest
\nassets,” said Dr. John Bulova, a retired surgeon
\nwho is co-chairing the capital campaign committee
\nwith his wife, Judith, a retired TD Bank
\nexecutive and a member of the Fort Hudson board
\nof directors. “There’s a great peace of mind that
\ncomes from knowing this organization is here
\nfor you when a loved one is in need of care. Our
\ncommittee is hopeful that people will stop to think
\nabout this in the coming days and that they’ll join
\nus in making a gift to this community treasure.”<\/p>\n
