\n<\/i>The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New
\nYork (LASNNY) moved in June to a new location
\nat 40 New St., Saratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

LASNNY, which is the successor organization
\nto the Legal Aid Society of Albany, provides free
\ncivil legal services and education to low-income
\nupstate New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

Officials said the new location will allow
\nthe staff to provide the residents of Saratoga,
\nWarren and Washington counties easier access
\nto services.<\/p>\n

“The Legal Aid Society provides an invaluable
\nservice to the many low income members
\nof our community who are in need of civil legal
\nadvice and counsel,” said Mayor Joanne Yepsen.
\n“I am very pleased that they will continue to be
\na presence in our city and I applaud the work
\nthey are doing, day in and day out.”<\/p>\n

The acquisition and rehabilitation of the
\nnew property proved to be a challenge the
\nUpstate New York legal community was willing
\nto take on. To date, the campaign has reached
\na total of $145,000 in donations, thanks to a
\nchallenge grant and match campaign initiated
\nby the Warren County Bar Foundation to the
\nWarren County Bar Association, officials said.<\/p>\n

LASNNY hopes to raise an additional
\n$121,000 from members of the bar and the
\ncommunity at large.<\/p>\n

The Foundation, originally planning to
\nmatch funds up to $15,000, increased its
\npledge by $5,000 when it saw the remarkable
\nresponse from its members, officials said. The
\nchallenger, the Warren County Bar Association,
\nmet its $20,000 match for a total gift of $43,000
\nto the campaign.<\/p>\n

James T. Towne Jr., principal at Towne, Ryan & Partners PC, and his
\nwife Sue, kicked of the fundraising campaign with a donation of
\n$25,000. To keep the momentum going, an additional $20,000 one-to-one
\nchallenge match was made by the Townes and E. Stewart Jones, partner at
\nE. Stewart Jones Hacker Murphy to members of the Saratoga Bar
\nAssociation.<\/p>\n

\n“When you realize the tireless work the
\nLASSNY attorneys and staff undertake each day
\non difficult and challenging matters on behalf
\nof the area’s most economically disadvantaged,
\nit was an easy task helping raise funds for this
\ngreat organization,” said Towne.<\/p>\n

The overall campaign is succeeding in driving
\ndown the 15-year mortgage on the property,
\nwhich will lend not only to a considerable
\nsavings over the life of the loan and necessary
\nrenovations, but also allow for a greater
\nfocus on providing quality legal services, the
\norganization said.<\/p>\n

The new location also houses LASNNY’s
\nPrivate Attorney Involvement staff, including
\nMichele Sleight, Cheryl Dedes and Drew Wagner.<\/p>\n

The program oversees the work of pro-bono
\nattorneys throughout LASNNY’s service area.<\/p>\n

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New
\nYork provides free civil legal services and
\neducation to and advocacy for people with low
\nincome or other barriers to accessing the legal
\nsystem. It secures basic needs, protects and
\npreserves legal rights, provide equal access to
\njustice and seek fairness and dignity for clients.
\nIt has a staff of 76 in five offices in the region,
\nserving 16 counties and the St. Regis Indian
\nReservation.<\/p>\n
