Do you picture yourself owning a new home,
\nstarting a business, or retiring comfortably?
\nThese are a few of the financial goals that may
\nbe important to you, and each comes with a price
\ntag attached.<\/p>\n

That’s where financial planning comes in.
\nFinancial planning is a process that can help
\nyou target your goals by evaluating your whole
\nfinancial picture, then outlining strategies that
\nare tailored to your individual needs and available
\nresources.<\/p>\n

Why is financial planning important? A comprehensive
\nfinancial plan serves as a framework
\nfor organizing the pieces of your financial picture.
\nWith a financial plan in place, you’ll be better able
\nto focus on your goals and understand what it will
\ntake to reach them.<\/p>\n

One of the main benefits of having a financial
\nplan is that it can help you balance competing
\nfinancial priorities. A financial plan will clearly
\nshow you how your financial goals are related–for
\nexample, how saving for your children’s college
\neducation might impact your ability to save for
\nretirement.<\/p>\n

Then you can use the information you’ve
\ngleaned to decide how to prioritize your goals,
\nimplement specific strategies, and choose suitable
\nproducts or services. Best of all, you’ll know
\nthat your financial life is headed in the right
\ndirection.<\/p>\n

Creating and implementing a comprehensive
\nfinancial plan generally involves working with
\nfinancial professionals to:<\/p>\n

\nfinancial situation by reviewing your income,
\nassets, and liabilities, and evaluating your insurance
\ncoverage, your investment portfolio, your
\ntax exposure, and your estate plan.<\/p>\n

\ntime frames for achieving these goals.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Implement strategies that address your
\ncurrent financial weaknesses and build on your

The financial planning process can involve a
\nnumber of professionals.
\nFinancial planners typically play a central role
\nin the process, focusing on your overall financial
\nplan, and often coordinating the activities of other
\nprofessionals who have expertise in specific areas.
\nAccountants or tax attorneys provide advice
\non federal and state tax issues.<\/p>\n

Estate planning attorneys help you plan your
\nestate and give advice on transferring and managing
\nyour assets before and after your death. Insurance
\nprofessionals evaluate insurance needs and
\nrecommend appropriate products and strategies.<\/p>\n

Investment advisors provide advice about
\ninvestment options and asset allocation, and can
\nhelp you plan a strategy to manage your investment
\nportfolio.<\/p>\n

The most important member of the team, however,
\nis you. Your needs and objectives drive the
\nteam, and once you’ve carefully considered any
\nrecommendations, all decisions lie in your hands.
\nYou can, if you have enough time and knowledge,
\nbut developing a comprehensive financial
\nplan may require expertise in several areas. A
\nfinancial professional can give you objective information
\nand help you weigh your alternatives,
\nsaving you time and ensuring that all angles of
\nyour financial picture are covered.<\/p>\n

The financial planning process doesn’t end
\nonce your initial plan has been created. Your
\nplan should generally be reviewed at least once
\na year to make sure that it’s up-to-date. It’s also
\npossible that you’ll need to modify your plan due
\nto changes in your personal circumstances or the
\neconomy. Here are some of the events that might
\ntrigger a review of your financial plan:<\/p>\n

Your goals or time horizons change when:

\nmarriage, the birth of a child, health problems,
\nor a job loss.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 You have a specific or immediate financial
\nplanning need (e.g., drafting a will, managing a
\ndistribution from a retirement account, paying
\nlong-term care expenses).<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Your income or expenses substantially increase
\nor decrease.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 Your portfolio hasn’t performed as expected.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u00a2 You’re affected by changes to the economy
\nor tax laws<\/p>\n

Don’t wait until you’re in the midst of a
\nfinancial crisis before beginning the planning
\nprocess. The sooner you start, the more options
\nyou may have.<\/p>\n

Each financial plan is tailored to the needs of
\nthe individual, so how complicated the process
\nwill be depends on your individual circumstances.
\nBut no matter what type of help you need, a financial
\nprofessional will work hard to make the
\nprocess as easy as possible, and will gladly answer
\nall of your questions.<\/p>\n

A financial professional is trained to listen to
\nyour concerns, identify any underlying issues, and
\nhelp you find common ground.<\/p>\n

Financial planning professionals make recommendations,
\nnot decisions. You retain control
\nover your finances. Recommendations will be
\nbased on your needs, values, goals, and time
\nframes. You decide which recommendations to
\nfollow, then work with a financial professional
\nto implement them.<\/p>\n
