By helping businesses<br \/>\nsave on average 34 percent on their electric<br \/>\nbills, &#8220;we know we can help larger Caribbean<br \/>\neconomies,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Redfeather President<br \/>\nMarion Trieste, energy costs in the Caribbean<br \/>\nIslands are among some of the highest<br \/>\nreported in the world. Diesel or heavy fuel<br \/>\nis commonly burned to generate electricity.<br \/>\nThe scarcity of commercially-focused energy<br \/>\nsavings companies, as well as an overall lack<br \/>\nof access to funding, leaves many in the<br \/>\nCaribbean hotel sector unable to convert to<br \/>\na more energy efficient plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Energy efficiency technology is helping<br \/>\nhotels save over 30 percent of their<br \/>\nelectricity costs annually. It is enormously<br \/>\nimportant and timely to conserve energy,<br \/>\nespecially in places that are paying the most<br \/>\nfor it,&#8221; said Trieste.<\/p>\n<p>Said Alberti, &#8220;We want to show the power<br \/>\nof private investment to achieve social<br \/>\ngood. Dollar for dollar, energy efficiency<br \/>\ninvestments are the most cost effective way<br \/>\nto reduce carbon emissions, even more effective<br \/>\nthan renewable energy. We had great encouragement from our new board member,<br \/>\nKarl R\u00e1bago, a nationally recognized expert<br \/>\nin clean distributed generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Redfeather helps oversee, coordinate,<br \/>\nfinance and procure clean energy efficiency<br \/>\nprojects. Projects come at no up-front cost<br \/>\nto hotel owners and are paid for by each<br \/>\nbusiness in installment payments, over the<br \/>\ncourse of five years. Completed projects are<br \/>\nsold into portfolio funds.<\/p>\n<p>Redfeather also provides support in<br \/>\nmarketing properties as environmentally<br \/>\nresponsible tourist destinations, including<br \/>\nverification of energy savings that can be<br \/>\nused to fulfill requirements of green tourism<br \/>\ncertification agencies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our business is focused on energy efficiency<br \/>\nfor hotels in the Caribbean and<br \/>\nmost of them are using solar energy to help<br \/>\nwith reducing energy consumption, said<br \/>\nTrieste. &#8220;Energy efficiency improvements<br \/>\ncan significantly cut operating costs, while<br \/>\nat the same time improving the real state<br \/>\nvalue of a property. It can be done in a way<br \/>\nthat attracts hotel guests, reduces carbon<br \/>\nfootprints and helps create sustainable<br \/>\nCaribbean jobs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alberti said the return on investment for<br \/>\nenergy efficiency projects in the Caribbean<br \/>\nis &#8220;indisputably high,&#8221; but each project is too<br \/>\nsmall to attract private investors.
