The New York State Energy Research and
\nDevelopment Authority (NYSERDA) said that data
\nfrom a first-of-its-kind study that compiled energy related
\ninformation from more than 3,000 homes
\nin New York is now available for use in identifying
\nopportunities for energy efficiency improvements.<\/p>\n
State officials said data will help municipalities,
\nbuilders, architects, HVAC and other energy service
\ncontractors–distributors, manufacturers and
\nothers–identify opportunities for energy efficiency
\nprojects, further driving clean energy business
\ndevelopment in the state.<\/p>\n
Utilities will also benefit from this baseline
\ninformation to customize programs and estimate
\nenergy savings impacts going forward, according
\nto NYSERDA. The data is available at the website open.ny.gov<\/p>\n
The Residential Statewide Baseline Study
\nwas developed by NYSERDA to understand the
\nresidential building stock and associated energy use,
\nand the penetration of energy-efficient equipment,
\nbuilding characteristics and energy management
\npractices. The five-volume study also includes a
\nheating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC)
\nmarket assessment to identify the baseline conditions
\nfor residential non-electric heating and water heating
\nequipment and central air conditioning in the state.<\/p>\n
Officials said the availability of the data greatly
\nincreases the amount of information publicly
\navailable about the residential building stock. The data
\ninclude more than 300 categories of energy-related
\ninformation for each of more than 3,000 new and
\nexisting single-family and multifamily residential
\nbuildings, such as property characteristics, heating
\nand cooling equipment, water heating equipment,
\nlighting, clothes washing and drying equipment,
\nand energy behaviors of respondents. The data on
\neach building includes zip codes, enabling users to
\nexamine specific geographic regions of the state.<\/p>\n
The study provides information to support the
\nstate in advancing Reforming the Energy Vision
\n(REV), a state strategy to build a clean, resilient
\nand affordable energy system for all New Yorkers.
\nAs part of REV, NYSERDA aims to make a range of
\nenergy-related data sets available in its ongoing role
\nas credible information provider.<\/p>\n
Prior to adding the residential energy data to
\nopen.ny.gov, NYSERDA added data on 32,000 solar
\nprojects.<\/p>\n
Officials said key findings from the Residential
\nStatewide Baseline Study include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Almost one-quarter of single-family homes are 75 years old or older, representing<\/p>\n
opportunities for
\nweatherization (air sealing and insulation) to reduce
\nenergy waste. Further, about 42 percent of all homes
\nhave no foundation insulation and almost 7 percent
\nhave no wall insulation.<\/p>\n
\u2022 About 20 percent of natural gas heating systems
\nand 29 percent of fuel oil heating systems are more
\nthan 20 years old, representing opportunities for
\nmore efficient heating systems that reduce energy use.<\/p>\n
\u2022 More than 80 percent of the central air
\nconditioning systems statewide were not high
\nefficiency.<\/p>\n
NYSERDA said there is opportunity for service
\nproviders to promote annual tune-ups as a way to
\nprovide additional energy savings to their customer
\nbase. About 58 percent of homes with furnaces and
\nboilers indicated their heating equipment had been
\nserviced in 2013 and 2014. Only about 40 percent of
\nhomes with central air conditioners (AC) indicated
\nthat their AC equipment had been serviced in 2013
\nor 2014.<\/p>\n
About one-quarter of the natural gas central
\nheating systems in multifamily buildings are more
\nthan 20 years old and could be replaced with newer
\nmore efficient systems.<\/p>\n
“Public accessibility to the Residential Statewide
\nBaseline Study data will be valuable for contractors,
\nbuilders, or anyone working in the construction
\ntrades to better understand the current residential
\nlandscape and help identify potential energy
\nefficiency opportunities,” said John B. Rhodes,
\nNYSERDA president and CEO. “By making available
\nthese residential energy data on open.ny.gov, we are
\nproviding an information resource that has never
\nbeen available before.”<\/p>\n
The study was a collaboration among NYSERDA,
\nthe state Department of Public Service, Central
\nHudson Gas and Electric Corp., Consolidated Edison,
\nNational Grid, New York State Electric & Gas, Orange
\n& Rockland Utilities, Rochester Gas and Electric,
\nand PSEG Long Island, among other stakeholders.
\nIt was conducted using phone and Internet surveys
\nbetween 2011 and 2014.<\/p>\n
OpenNY was launched in 2013, advancing a datadriven
\nstrategy providing public access to publishable
\nstate data for collaboration and analysis. The program
\nputs tools for transparency, accountability, citizen
\nengagement and innovation directly into the hands
\nof New Yorkers and people all around the world by
\nproviding user friendly, centralized access to machine
\nreadable data to explore, search, download, analyze
