Bethesda Episcopal Church on Washington
\nStreet in Saratoga Springs, a block up from
\nBroadway, is planning the construction of a
\nnew multi-purpose building that will hold
\noffices and rooms for use by the church community.<\/p>\n

The new structure will be built on a 0.68-
\nacre plot of land next to the church. Ground
\nwill be broken in the spring, church officials
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

The parish received approval from the
\nSaratoga Springs Planning Board in early
\nSeptember for the new parish house, which
\nwill adjoin the existing church, a stately stone
\nbuilding built in 1840.<\/p>\n

Dean Marshall J. Vang, interim rector said
\nit will house parish administrative offices, a
\ndining hall with capacity for 200, a chapel,
\nearly childhood education facilities and a
\ncommercial rental space.<\/p>\n

He said the building will allow for the parish
\nto focus on connecting with the community.
\n“Christ’s miracle at the healing springs of
\nBethesda impels us to focus on missions that
\nheal families and communities. Hence our
\nfocus on these priorities for the new facility,”
\nsaid Vang.<\/p>\n

Bethesda sold its existing parish house and
\nformer rectory. They also have a pending sale for a third property it owns near Saratoga Lake,
\naccording to Parish Building Committee Chairman
\nGordon Boyd. Boyd said designers for the
\nproject are John G. Waite Associates of Albany.<\/p>\n

Boyd said they have guided the design with
\nGothic revival elements. The new wing keeps in
\nline with the original church design by Richard
\nUpjohn, and its addition by A. Page Brown.
\n“The new facility is the first major change
\nin Bethesda’s configuration in more than a
\ncentury,” said Boyd.<\/p>\n

Michael Ingersoll from the LA Group,
\nLandscape Architecture and Engineering will
\nbe implementing the design for the four-story
\nmixed-use center.
\n“The new building is modern, but respectful
\nof the church, using similar materials and
\ncolors,” Ingersoll said.<\/p>\n

The Bethseda Parish also plans to improve
\non its current building through a fundraising
\neffort with the help of the New York Landmarks
\nConservancy, which awarded a matching
\ngrant to the parish this year.<\/p>\n

Through the grant the church plans to cofund
\na condition assessment that will examine
\nkey elements such as conditions of the roof,
\nplumbing, electrical, accessibility measures
\nand other infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Boyd said the goal is for the new building
\nto be up and running by 2017.<\/p>\n
