Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the
\ntop of mind request for most of our customers,
\nwhether it’s to upgrade to a better system, or
\nfor a first time install, but the “newest thing”
\nisn’t always the best product for your business.<\/p>\n

The term VoIP is being thrown around as
\na catch-all for many levels of service and it’s
\nimportant to understand what you are actually
\ngetting when you are offered a VoIP Solution.<\/p>\n

Within your business, a true VoIP system
\nuses your existing network to manage both your
\ncomputer traffic and your phone traffic on the
\nsame data lines, therefore saving you the cost of
\nadditional cable runs. This is best implemented
\nin new construction, or for companies upgrading
\ntheir entire network infrastructure. In this
\ninstance, integrating your telephone service over
\nyour company network can save you money;
\nbut if not implemented correctly, can bring
\nyour network to a crawl and introduce a layer
\nof complexity that can impact your call quality,
\nand ultimately your customers.<\/p>\n

These integrations need to be planned and
\nimplemented by experienced professionals with
\na solid telephony and networking background.
\nTesting the existing bandwidth is required prior
\nto installing a VoIP system.<\/p>\n

Some service providers will sell VoIP or Session
\nInitiation Protocol (SIP) where the data line
\ncoming into your building caries both your voice
\nand data over the same line. You may still have
\nthe old digital phone system you purchased five
\nyears ago. However, the service provider will install a converter so your phone system can send
\nyour phone calls through those new data lines.<\/p>\n

Although technically a VoIP system, this is
\nnot an end-to-end solution and you still have
\nseparate phone and data lines within your
\noffice, and you retain your old phone system.
\nThis option can save some companies money
\non their monthly phone bill, so don’t be quick
\nto dismiss this as a viable option. Ask your
\ntechnology provider for an assessment of your
\ncarrier services so you can determine the actual
\nsavings you could receive.<\/p>\n

The last option is fully hosted VoIP. With this
\ntype of system, the phone on your desk connects
\ndirectly to the internet, and ultimately
\nto software in the cloud, which manages your
\nphone calls.<\/p>\n

With a large number of the hosted services
\ncurrently in the marketplace, your call quality
\nis at the mercy of the internet. Once that call
\nleaves your network, you may have one call
\nthat is crystal clear, while the next call sounds
\nlike you are connected to someone hiking in
\nthe Adirondacks, talking on a cell phone from
\nthe 1990s. There are, however, companies that
\nhave refined the technology to manage and
\nmonitor the call quality. These companies will
\nprovide guaranteed reliability, so be sure to do
\nyour research before considering a hosted VoIP
\nprovider. This application is best for companies
\nwith multiple locations across geographically
\ndiverse regions.<\/p>\n

The key consideration in any VoIP solution
\nis to have a network audit to determine your
\ncurrent status, and the appropriate bandwidth
\nnecessary to implement a VoIP solution.<\/p>\n

Understanding the different flavors of VoIP
\nwill help you decide which, if any, is the best
\noption for you.<\/p>\n

VoIP systems are perfect for many of today’s
\nbusiness needs; however, the current premise based
\nphone systems available today allow for
\nhybrid solutions that could provide you with
\nadditional options.<\/p>\n
