\nNY, selling a sweet treat called brigadeiros.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tais Masala-Finale has started a business that
\nbrings a traditional sweet treat from Brazil to
\nSaratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

The Brazil native is the owner and operator
\nof Bon Bon Brazil NY, a gourmet brigadeiros
\ncompany based in Saratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

She said Brigadeiro (bree-gah-de-roh)
\nwas first made in the 1940s. During the lean
\nyears around World War II, access to fruits
\nand sweets were limited, hence there was a
\nneed to get creative with just a few simple ingredients–
\ncocoa powder, unsalted butter and
\ncondensed milk.<\/p>\n

“Thanks to a few ladies in Rio de Janeiro,
\nbrigadeiro was born,” she said. The treats are
\na mixture of milk, sugar, butter and chocolate,
\nslowly cooked and hand rolled into bite size
\nballs. She makes them in more than 24 flavors.<\/p>\n

Masala-Finale and Bon Bon Brazil NY will be
\nat the Saratoga Farmer’s Market every Sunday at
\nthe Lincoln Baths in the Saratoga Spa State Park.<\/p>\n

Masala-Finale was born and raised in Brazil,
\nand has lived in America with her husband for
\ntwo and a half years. She met her husband in
\nDublin, Ireland, while she was studying English
\nyears ago.<\/p>\n

She said upon moving to America, she gave
\nalmost all of her furniture to the movers, believing
\nshe did not have enough room for it all.
\nOn her first day in Saratoga Springs, she saw
\na table and two chairs in her neighbor’s yard
\nunder a tree.<\/p>\n

“I thought it was abandoned and being
\nthrown away. I was walking away with one of the
\nchairs and my neighbor came out of his home
\nscreaming, ‘What are you doing?’ He began to
\nyell at me in Portuguese,” said Masala-Finale.
\nThe two realized they were both from Brazil and
\nquickly became friends. Masala-Finale made
\n350 brigadeiro for his wedding soon after. Word
\nspread about the unusual treats and requests began
\nto pile up.<\/p>\n

Masala-Finale is incorporating popular
\nAmerican flavors, such as pumpkin spice, into
\nthe traditional Brazilian candy.<\/p>\n

“I have always loved cooking. I struggle
\nto charge money for my food, because it’s
\nsomething I do from my heart. It hurts me to
\ncharge money for these, but that is life,” said
\nMasala-Finale.<\/p>\n

“I am excited to show people a very traditional
\nsweet from Brazil. With the love that I
\nmake this, I am very careful. I am coming up
\nwith lactose-free and vegan chocolate. I want to
\ngive people what they want,” said Masala-Finale.<\/p>\n
