Carolyn Keating, owner of Heritage Lifestyle Design, offers advice to people who want to perk up their wardrobes or the interior of their homes without spending a lot of money.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Sometimes a tweak is as good as a makeover.
\nCarolyn Keating, owner of Heritage Lifestyle
\nDesign, offers advice to people who want to perk
\nup their wardrobes or the interior of their homes
\nwithout spending a lot of money.<\/p>\n

She helps clients retain both clothes they have
\nor furnishings they love, by freshening them up
\nfor a new look.<\/p>\n

Keating calls her work, which she began about a
\nmonth ago, in clients’ homes “interior styling,” not
\ninterior decorating.<\/p>\n

She makes what she calls “loving suggestions”
\nfor improving their surroundings without spending
\na great deal of money and “incorporating
\nthings they love into their lifestyle.” The name of
\nthe business reflects that philosophy.<\/p>\n

“So much of who you are comes from family
\nand experience,” Keating noted, and she tries to
\nbuild on that background.<\/p>\n

The process often begins with a home visit, a
\nchance to get to know both the client and the home.
\n“I try to get to know them and understand
\ntheir lifestyle,” she explained. For example, are
\nthere small children in the home? Cats or dogs?
\nThen, she will make suggestions to rearrange some
\nthings, get rid of some, add a few new things,
\nperhaps paint a wall a different color or change
\nan area rug. Often, she will recommend adding
\nsome touches of color to a room decorated in
\nneutral tones.<\/p>\n

Keating does not sell furnishings. However,
\nshe will find the items for her clients, preferably
\nthrough local businesses.<\/p>\n

“I try to keep it as local as possible,” she said, but
\nif something is not available locally, she will help
\na client find it and buy it online. In addition, she
\ncan arrange the installation of the furniture item,
\nor be at the home to receive deliveries. However,
\nshe leaves most of the “heavy lifting” to the clients.<\/p>\n

In the future, Keating said she hopes to establish
\nrelationships with area retailers that can result in
\ndiscounts for clients.<\/p>\n

Her approach to “personal styling” is similar. She calls herself a “closet stylist,” ready to look through a client’s closet and “work with what you have to
\ncreate new looks.” She wants her clients to “get a
\nbetter grasp of whatever is hanging in their closet”
\nand to try new combinations.<\/p>\n

She and the client may go shopping together to
\nfind the items that will brighten up the wardrobe.
\n“When you look better and like what you are
\nwearing, you exude confidence,” she said.<\/p>\n

She tries to find local sources of clothing and
\naccessories but for what is not available nearby,
\nshe expands to online sources.<\/p>\n

For more than a year, Keating has done personal
\nstyling for men. She has delighted in seeing her
\nclients “changing their lives through changing
\nwhat they put on their body,” she said. “They were
\nso happy.”<\/p>\n

Keating relocated to Ballston Spa about four
\nyears ago from Westchester County, but until
\nrecently, she continued working in New York City.
\nHer background is in fashion, both menswear and
\nwomen’s clothing, most recently as an account
\nexecutive with a women’s accessories business.<\/p>\n

She officially launched her new business in October
\nat the Saratoga County Business-to-Business
\nExpo hosted by the Saratoga County Chamber of
\nCommerce. She expects to continue networking at
\nsimilar events as she builds her business, depending
\nupon referrals and word of mouth. She also has
\na website and plans to create a blog. Later, she will
\nadd conventional advertising to the mix.<\/p>\n

For now, Keating is working from her home but
\nshe hopes to have a shop “in the near future.” She
\nmeets clients at their homes or at a local coffee
\nshop. She doesn’t know yet what the balance will
\nbe between home styling and personal styling
\nprojects, but expects that to vary with the season.
\nGenerally, she anticipates people are more likely to
\nwant to freshen up the closet in the fall or spring.<\/p>\n
