Towne Jr. was honored recently with<br \/>\nthe Legal Project Champion Award.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>When Attorney James T. Towne Jr., principal<br \/>\nand vice president of Towne, Ryan &amp; Partners<br \/>\nPC, first approached the Legal Project Executive<br \/>\nDirector Lisa Frisch about his concerns<br \/>\nregarding the difficulties surrounding legal<br \/>\nassistance in rural communities &#8211; he found a<br \/>\nkindred spirit.<\/p>\n<p>The Legal Project, a nonprofit organization<br \/>\nwhose mission is to make the law more accessible<br \/>\nto those in need&#8211;especially to victims of<br \/>\ndomestic violence&#8211;was in the very beginning<br \/>\nstages of developing a Civil Legal Outreach<br \/>\nCenter.<\/p>\n<p>The center is envisioned to establish relationships<br \/>\nwith public libraries and other<br \/>\ncommunity centers across the greater Capital<br \/>\nRegion to provide those living in rural areas,<br \/>\nthose without transportation, and those who<br \/>\nhave physical challenges a convenient location<br \/>\nto readily access legal advice and support<br \/>\nservices. Project officials say that when completed,<br \/>\nit will utilize state-of-the-art technology<br \/>\nto remotely connect those individuals<br \/>\nwith attorneys for private, &#8220;face-to-face&#8221; legal<br \/>\nconsultations, allowing them to resolve their<br \/>\ncivil legal concerns more quickly and with<br \/>\nfewer obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>The Outreach Center will expand the Legal<br \/>\nProject&#8217;s services&#8217; footprint.<\/p>\n<p>In the following months after his initial<br \/>\nconversation with Frisch, Towne committed<br \/>\nhimself to backing the organization&#8217;s endeavor<br \/>\nthrough ideas, his time and essential funding<br \/>\nto make the Outreach Center a reality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The challenges facing many rural domestic<br \/>\nviolence victims in accessing legal support<br \/>\nservices is exacerbated by the limited number<br \/>\nof attorneys practicing in rural areas, coupled<br \/>\nwith limited or non-existent public transportation,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Towne. &#8220;Hopefully, through the<br \/>\nOutreach Center, the excellent legal support<br \/>\nservices provided by the Legal Project will be<br \/>\nmade readily available to remote legal services<br \/>\nconsumers through enhanced technology.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of his guidance and dedication<br \/>\nto this project, Towne was honored with<br \/>\nthe prestigious Legal Project Champion Award,<br \/>\nwhich he received at the Pro Bono Awards<br \/>\nLuncheon in October at the Century House in<br \/>\nLatham. The annual award is given to individuals<br \/>\nthroughout the Capital District who have<br \/>\nmade a tremendous difference in supporting the<br \/>\nwork of the Legal Project and promoting<br \/>\nthe organization&#8217;s mission.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jim was chosen to be recognized for The<br \/>\nLegal Project Champion Award because of<br \/>\nhis leadership and on-going guidance in the<br \/>\ndevelopment of this vital project, which will<br \/>\nimpact many people who otherwise would have<br \/>\ndifficulty accessing critical civil legal help in<br \/>\nour communities,&#8221; said Frisch.<\/p>\n<p>To continue propelling this project and<br \/>\nfuture projects for the organization, Towne<br \/>\nadditionally agreed to serve as a member of<br \/>\nthe Legal Project&#8217;s Advisory Board. The board,<br \/>\nwhich consists of leaders in the Capital Region&#8217;s<br \/>\nlegal community who share in the mission<br \/>\nof the organization, works together with the<br \/>\nboard of directors and the executive director on<br \/>\nsignificant projects and planning for the Legal<br \/>\nProject&#8217;s programs and fundraising activities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Technology is perhaps the best way to reach<br \/>\nthose in critical need of access to legal advice<br \/>\nconcerning their rights and responsibilities,&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid Towne. &#8220;This gift will hopefully provide<br \/>\nthe groundwork for an effective platform for<br \/>\nmany years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Legal Project was founded in 1995 by<br \/>\nthe Capital District Women&#8217;s Bar Association.<br \/>\nTo learn more about the organization or to<br \/>\ndonate, visit www.legalproject.org.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> James T.
