James T. Towne Jr. was honored recently with
\nthe Legal Project Champion Award.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When Attorney James T. Towne Jr., principal
\nand vice president of Towne, Ryan & Partners
\nPC, first approached the Legal Project Executive
\nDirector Lisa Frisch about his concerns
\nregarding the difficulties surrounding legal
\nassistance in rural communities – he found a
\nkindred spirit.<\/p>\n

The Legal Project, a nonprofit organization
\nwhose mission is to make the law more accessible
\nto those in need–especially to victims of
\ndomestic violence–was in the very beginning
\nstages of developing a Civil Legal Outreach
\nCenter.<\/p>\n

The center is envisioned to establish relationships
\nwith public libraries and other
\ncommunity centers across the greater Capital
\nRegion to provide those living in rural areas,
\nthose without transportation, and those who
\nhave physical challenges a convenient location
\nto readily access legal advice and support
\nservices. Project officials say that when completed,
\nit will utilize state-of-the-art technology
\nto remotely connect those individuals
\nwith attorneys for private, “face-to-face” legal
\nconsultations, allowing them to resolve their
\ncivil legal concerns more quickly and with
\nfewer obstacles.<\/p>\n

The Outreach Center will expand the Legal
\nProject’s services’ footprint.<\/p>\n

In the following months after his initial
\nconversation with Frisch, Towne committed
\nhimself to backing the organization’s endeavor
\nthrough ideas, his time and essential funding
\nto make the Outreach Center a reality.<\/p>\n

“The challenges facing many rural domestic
\nviolence victims in accessing legal support
\nservices is exacerbated by the limited number
\nof attorneys practicing in rural areas, coupled
\nwith limited or non-existent public transportation,”
\nsaid Towne. “Hopefully, through the
\nOutreach Center, the excellent legal support
\nservices provided by the Legal Project will be
\nmade readily available to remote legal services
\nconsumers through enhanced technology.”<\/p>\n

In recognition of his guidance and dedication
\nto this project, Towne was honored with
\nthe prestigious Legal Project Champion Award,
\nwhich he received at the Pro Bono Awards
\nLuncheon in October at the Century House in
\nLatham. The annual award is given to individuals
\nthroughout the Capital District who have
\nmade a tremendous difference in supporting the
\nwork of the Legal Project and promoting
\nthe organization’s mission.<\/p>\n

“Jim was chosen to be recognized for The
\nLegal Project Champion Award because of
\nhis leadership and on-going guidance in the
\ndevelopment of this vital project, which will
\nimpact many people who otherwise would have
\ndifficulty accessing critical civil legal help in
\nour communities,” said Frisch.<\/p>\n

To continue propelling this project and
\nfuture projects for the organization, Towne
\nadditionally agreed to serve as a member of
\nthe Legal Project’s Advisory Board. The board,
\nwhich consists of leaders in the Capital Region’s
\nlegal community who share in the mission
\nof the organization, works together with the
\nboard of directors and the executive director on
\nsignificant projects and planning for the Legal
\nProject’s programs and fundraising activities.<\/p>\n

“Technology is perhaps the best way to reach
\nthose in critical need of access to legal advice
\nconcerning their rights and responsibilities,”
\nsaid Towne. “This gift will hopefully provide
\nthe groundwork for an effective platform for
\nmany years to come.”<\/p>\n

\nthe Capital District Women’s Bar Association.
