The group is restoring a section of the Roosevelt Baths to make it the center of its activities.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>BY MAUREEN WERTHER<\/p>\n<p>The healing and restorative powers of<br \/>\nSaratoga&#8217;s mineral springs were revered by the<br \/>\nMohawk and Iroquois people 400 years before<br \/>\nthe colonists learned of them, and more than<br \/>\n700 years before Franklin Roosevelt commissioned<br \/>\nthe creation of Saratoga Spa State Park.<\/p>\n<p>The recently formed nonprofit group Coesa,<br \/>\nInc. is now devoted to renewing and strengthening<br \/>\nthe tradition of health and healing that<br \/>\nis an integral part of Saratoga Springs&#8217; mantra<br \/>\nof &#8220;Health, History, and Horses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Named after a re-discovered and formerly<br \/>\npopular spring in the park, Coesa Holistic<br \/>\nWellness Center was created in 2014 by a<br \/>\ngroup of local professional women who are<br \/>\npractitioners of yoga and proponents of holistic<br \/>\nhealth and wellness. They obtained their<br \/>\n501C3 status in March and began running<br \/>\nprograms in April.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal of Coesa is to restore<br \/>\nRoosevelt II, the 18,000-square-foot mirror<br \/>\nbuilding of the Roosevelt Baths, to its original<br \/>\nstate and create a center similar to the Kripalu<br \/>\nCenter in Lenox, Mass., or the Omega Institute<br \/>\nin Rhinebeck, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p>Roosevelt II has been standing unused and<br \/>\nvacant for more than 30 years. While New York<br \/>\nstate committed to making repairs to the roof<br \/>\nin 2013, there is still much work to be done<br \/>\nbefore the building can be fully re-purposed.<\/p>\n<p>Two local attorneys, Stephanie Ferradino<br \/>\nand Elizabeth Coreno, spearheaded the Coesa<br \/>\ninitiative. Having traveled extensively to numerous<br \/>\nhealing centers across the country and<br \/>\naround the world, both women recognized<br \/>\nthe untapped potential for a similar center in<br \/>\nSaratoga Springs.<\/p>\n<p>With such easy access to Saratoga Springs<br \/>\nhotels and restaurants, a vibrant downtown,<br \/>\nand a variety of other historic, cultural, and<br \/>\nentertainment venues, Coesa board members<br \/>\nfeel that Roosevelt II is an ideal location. They<br \/>\nare passionate about strengthening the Spa<br \/>\nState Park&#8217;s focus on health and wellness<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After all,&#8221; said Coreno, &#8220;this was FDR&#8217;s vision<br \/>\nfor the park in the first place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As part of its fundraising efforts, Coesa received<br \/>\na temporary permit during the summer<br \/>\nto conduct yoga, tai chi, and Qi gong classes<br \/>\non the park grounds, all of which were well<br \/>\nattended and helped spread the word about<br \/>\nCoesa, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Their largest fundraiser to date was held in<br \/>\nOctober at the Bowtie Cinema and included<br \/>\na screening of an independent film, &#8220;The<br \/>\nFirst Line,&#8221; which stars Pantelis Kodogianis,<br \/>\na Saratoga Springs native. The film is about<br \/>\ntwo Greek lawyers who sue the British government<br \/>\nfor the return of the Parthenon marbles.<br \/>\nThe theme of the film resonated with Coreno,<br \/>\nwho compared it to Coesa&#8217;s efforts to return<br \/>\nRoosevelt II to its original state.<\/p>\n<p>Coesa has also applied for a $300,000 state<br \/>\nPark Acquisition, Development and Planning<br \/>\ngrant, which is still pending. If they receive the<br \/>\ngrant, Coesa will use the money to refurbish<br \/>\napproximately 2,000 square feet in Roosevelt<br \/>\nII, enough to allow Coesa to hold yoga and<br \/>\nother classes there, said Coreno.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the Saratoga Springs City Council<br \/>\nadopted a resolution to support Coesa&#8217;s efforts.<br \/>\nThe group&#8217;s five-year goal is to have Roosevelt<br \/>\nII completely rehabbed and home to<br \/>\nCoesa Holistic Wellness Center.<\/p>\n<p>Just as Native American forebears created<br \/>\nsettlements near the &#8220;place of miraculous<br \/>\nwaters,&#8221; Coesa&#8217;s vision is to re-establish the<br \/>\nhealth and wellness component of the park<br \/>\nand create a world renowned center for &#8220;holistic<br \/>\nhealth and personal growth for mind,<br \/>\nbody, and spirit&#8221; from which all can benefit,<br \/>\nthe group states.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about Coesa Holistic<br \/>\nWellness Center, visit them on Facebook at<br \/>\nCoesainthepark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> People practice yoga in the Spa State Park as part of Coesa Inc.&#8217;s wellness and healing initiatives.
