SUNY Adirondack will be the recipient of
\na $9.7 million grant enabling it to build the
\nAdirondack Regional Workforce Readiness
\nCenter that will house extensive applied learning
\nand training initiatives to help prepare
\nthe Capital Region’s workforce for the jobs of
\nthe future.<\/p>\n
The grant announced by the state is part of
\nthe fourth round of NYSUNY 2020 Challenge
\ngrants.<\/p>\n
“As upstate New York’s economy continues
\ngrow, we must ensure that our workforce has
\nthe skills and training needed to fulfill the jobs
\ncreated by new and emerging industries,” Gov.
\nAndrew Cuomo said. “This grant will allow
\nSUNY Adirondack to build a state-of-theart
\nfacility that ensures workers receive the
\ntraining they need, so that new businesses are
\nassured of a quality workforce.”<\/p>\n
It will be built on the Queensbury campus.<\/p>\n
\nSUNY Adirondack President Kristine Duffy
\nsaid the new facility funded by the grant "will
\nplace SUNY Adirondack at the center of workforce
\ndevelopment in our region. This new,
\nstate-of-the-art facility will support healthcare
\nworkers in high demand, small business development
\nand growth, and create dedicated space
\nto invite a cutting-edge Lyme disease research
\nand testing lab to our region."<\/p>\n
Duffy said it will result in a single-stop
\nfor the business community to engage with
\nstudents and faculty "to create meaningful
\nexperiences that support a 21st-century learning
\nenvironment where students apply their
\nclassroom knowledge to real-world settings
\nthrough partnerships with area businesses and
\neducation leaders."<\/p>\n
State officials said the Workforce Readiness
\nCenter will work with local employers to train
\nstudents to meet regional workforce development
\nneeds, support the goals of SUNY and
\nthe Capital Region Economic Development
\nCouncil, and, above all else, contribute to helping
\nresidents secure employment in the region.<\/p>\n
It will include state-of-the-art training
\nsimulation labs for the region's healthcare
\nworkforce, create a single point of contact for
\nsmall business start-up and growth in a largely
\nentrepreneurial-minded community, and
\ncentralize the college's workforce development
\nstaff and resources.<\/p>\n
The physical components of the facility
\ninclude a 10,000-square-foot addition connecting
\nSUNY Adirondack's existing Regional
\nHigher Education Center to the college's science
\nbuilding. Key components of this new
\nspace are planned to include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Business Central, a "one-stop" solution
\ncenter to connect businesses with prospective
\nemployees, career readiness partners and other
\nresources used to help small business grow<\/p>\n
\u2022 Healthcare Simulation Labs, a local training
\ncenter for nursing and healthcare workers
\nthat leverages SUNY Adirondack and SUNY
\nPlattsburgh's new RN-to-BSN articulation
\nprogram<\/p>\n
\u2022 Lyme disease research and testing labs
\nin partnership with the German company
\nInfectoLab<\/p>\n
\u2022 Expanded and enhanced facilities for the
\ncollege's growing Office of Continuing Education
\nand their workforce training and personal
\nenrichment programs<\/p>\n
\u2022 High-capacity, adaptable conference and
\ntraining space for college and community
\nfunctions and events.<\/p>\n
State Sen. Betty Little of Queensbury said,
\n"I can't wait to see the students take advantage
\nof all that this new workforce readiness center
\nwill have to offer … I was very pleased to support
\nSUNY Adirondack's 20\/20 application and
\ncould not be happier."<\/p>\n
Assemblyman Dan Stec of Queensbury said
\nthe investment into educating the workforce
\n"will ensure that our region's workforce has
\nthe skills needed to succeed in the jobs of the
\nfuture."<\/p>\n
SUNY Adirondack's Workforce Readiness
\nCenter proposal for the SUNY 2020 grant was
\nbased on a comprehensive study of its Facilities
\nMaster Plan, current facility usage and a review
\nof the needs among the region's business communities,
\nstate officials said. It demonstrated a
\nclear need for a dedicated location to further
\nthe college's many existing applied learning
\nand workforce training initiatives.<\/p>\n
According to the governor's office, the
\nproject is identified as an industry model for
\ncommunity college\/business partnerships that
\nsupport community and workforce needs.<\/p>\n
"The Adirondack Regional Workforce
\nReadiness Center will serve as an important
\nindustry model, showcasing the exceptional
\nopportunities created for students and faculty
\nwhen community colleges partner with the
\nlocal businesses community to provide job
\ntraining and collectively answer workforce
\ndemand," said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L.
\nZimpher.<\/p>\n
SUNY Adirondack has locations in
\nQueensbury, Wilton, and online and serves
\nmore than 4,000 students each year via its
\ncredit degrees, certifications and continuing
