The U.S. Mint joined the National Park
\nService on Nov. 17 to launch the Saratoga
\nNational Historical Park quarter.<\/p>\n
The quarter’s reverse (tails side) depicts
\na close-up of the moment British Gen. John
\nBurgoyne surrendered his sword to American
\nGen. Horatio Gates, a turning point many believe
\nmarked the ‘beginning of the end of the
\nAmerican Revolutionary War.’ Inscriptions
\nare “British Surrender 1777,” “Saratoga,” “New
\nYork,” “2015,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”<\/p>\n
“This new coin honors the patriots who
\nfought so bravely to defend our fledgling nation
\nand whose victory forever changed the
\nface of the world,” said Mint Acting Quality
\nManager Ron Harrigal.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of schoolchildren were on hand,
\nwith several of them participating in the ceremony
\nwhich was live-streamed to the public.
\nAdditional event participants included Mint
\nArtistic Infusion Program artist Barbara Fox,
\ndesigner of the coin’s reverse side; Saratoga
\nNational Historical Park Superintendent Amy
\nBracewell; park ranger and historian Eric
\nSchnitzer; and Matt Scollin, regional director
\nfor U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik.<\/p>\n
\nEvent attendees were among the first in the
\nnation to get newly minted quarters during
\nthe coin exchange held after the ceremony.
\nCollectible bags and rolls of circulating quality
\nSaratoga National Historical Park quarters
\nare available for purchase from the Mint at
\nwww.usmint.gov catalog and 1-800-USAMINT
\n(872-6468).<\/p>\n
The Saratoga National Historical Park
\nquarter is the 30th release in the America
\nthe Beautiful Quarters program, a 12-year
\ninitiative to honor 56 national parks and
\nother national sites authorized by Public
\nLaw 110-456.<\/p>\n
Each year, the public will see five new
\nnational sites depicted on the tails side of
\nthe America the Beautiful Quarters coins.
\nThe Mint is issuing these coins in the order
\nin which the sites were officially established,
\nofficials of the Mint said.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Mint was created by Congress in
\n1792 and became part of the Department of
\nthe Treasury in 1873. It is the nation’s sole
\nmanufacturer of legal tender coinage and is
\nresponsible for producing circulating coinage
\nfor trade and commerce. It also produces
\nnumismatic products, including proof, uncirculated,
\nand commemorative coins; congressional
\ngold medals; and silver and gold
\nbullion coins. The U.S. Mint’s numismatic
\nprograms are self-sustaining and operate at
