“Saratoga’s living room” is the vision that members
\nof the Universal Preservation Hall are see as
\nthey go forward with a capital campaign to help
\nbring necessary restoration to the Washington
\nStreet building a short distance from Broadway in
\nSaratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

Teddy Foster, the campaign manager at Universal
\nPreservation Hall, sees the building as more than
\njust a space for entertainment.<\/p>\n

“We want to be the cultural, collaborative center
\nthat downtown Saratoga wants and needs,” said
\nFoster.<\/p>\n

There are few venues available for artistic performances
\nand other cultural events in the city, she said.<\/p>\n


\nIn 2015 the Universal Preservation Hall held
\nmore than 25 events, including Electric City Couture,
\nChowderfest, and Saratoga ArtsFest. The hall
\nalso caters several weddings each year. The venue
\nprovides a space for all kinds of organizations and
\ncharities throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Some of the organizations that have expressed
\ninterest in using the facility include Nacre Dance
\nCompany, Saratoga TechOUT, Leadership Saratoga,
\nSkidmore College, Opera Saratoga, Caffe Lena, the
\nSaratoga Shakespeare Company, and more.<\/p>\n

“We don’t want just to do great performances,”
\nsaid Foster. “We want to be a place of collaboration
\nfor all kinds of artists.”<\/p>\n

In order to attract new entertainment and provide
\na space for artists, Universal Preservation Hall
\nis currently undergoing a massive capital campaign
\ntitled “The Road to Opening Night.” The campaign
\nstarted in July. The goal is to reach $4.3 million by
\nthe end of March.<\/p>\n

Plans are for the hall to close in April for construction
\nand renovation. The target for reopening would
\nbe September 2017.<\/p>\n

The campaign, she said, is “exceeding our own
\nexpectations” so far. The group has also applied for
\nseveral grants.<\/p>\n

Universal Preservation Hall was originally built
\nin 1871 as a church. Several important historical
\nfigures have given lectures there, including President
\nWilliam Taft and Frederick Douglass, the abolitionist
\nand statesman. The building gradually fell into disrepair.
\nIn 2006, an effort in the community raised more
\nthan $3 million to prevent it from being demolished.<\/p>\n

A more thorough renovation process is now
\nneeded to bring Universal Preservation Hall into
\nthe future, said Foster.<\/p>\n

Some of the renovations include adding more
\nseating to the main event room, to bring capacity
\nfrom 400 to 800 people; adding an elevator; constructing
\na new lobby that will be surrounded by
\nglass; installing a heating and cooling system; adding
\na dressing room for performers; and installing
\nlighting and sound systems.<\/p>\n

While the staff at Universal Preservation Hall
\nis excited about the future, there is also a respect
\nfor the past. In the main event room upstairs, the
\noriginal stained glass windows remain, as well as
\npews for sitting. The venue is studded with pictures
\nof its history to show how far it has come in a short
\namount of time.<\/p>\n

Universal Preservation Hall estimates that the
\nrenovations will help them host more than 200
\nevents in the first year after reopening. They also
\nplan to create six new full-time jobs and support
\nmore than 100 additional Saratoga Springs jobs.<\/p>\n

To accomplish this, Universal Preservation
\nHall has become an affiliate of Proctors Theatre in
\nSchenectady.<\/p>\n

“Proctors will bring us expertise in programming,
\nconstruction and fundraising,” said Foster. “They’ll
\nhelp us make our dreams come true.”<\/p>\n

Proctors Theatre will bring more diverse events
\nto Universal Preservation Hall, while still allowing
\nthe venue to cater to the kinds of local programming
\nit already attracts.<\/p>\n

The facility recently hosted a wedding and a dental
\nassistant graduation. “We are a blank slate here,”
\nFoster said. “We want to be Saratoga’s living room,
\nwhere any kind of event or program is welcome.”<\/p>\n
