Amy Stock was an adjunct lecturer and
\nprofessor with SUNY Empire State College.\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Amy Stock Memorial Scholarship in
\nSustainability has been established by the Stock
\nfamily and the Empire State College Foundation,
\nin memory of Amy L. Stock, who died July
\n19, in Albany at the age of 48, the victim of a
\ndrunk driver.<\/p>\n

An adjunct lecturer and professor with
\nSUNY Empire State College’s Center for
\nDistance Learning for nearly a decade, she
\ndesigned many of the courses she taught on
\necology and the environment. In 2008, Stock
\nco-founded Sustainable Saratoga, a grassroots
\nadvocacy group established to educate people
\nliving in the greater Saratoga Springs community
\nabout the benefits of achieving environmental
\nsustainability.<\/p>\n

In reflecting on her life, the Stock family
\nshared their thoughts with the college.<\/p>\n

“Whether Amy was composting, gardening,
\ntaking the bus, riding her bike or reusing plastic
\nZiploc bags, she lived her life in a sustainable
\nway every day,” said a family statement. “She
\nbelieved and demonstrated how one person
\ncould make a difference, which is why teaching
\nand advocacy for environmental sustainability
\nwere such an important part of her life.<\/p>\n


\n“Our hope for this scholarship is to allow
\nAmy’s legacy to live on through other young
\nwomen who are just as passionate about
\nsustainability and dedicated to protecting the
\nenvironment as Amy was.”<\/p>\n

“Amy’s untimely passing shocked the college
\ncommunity and we continue to mourn the loss
\nof a respected colleague and a good friend to
\nmany at the college,” said Merodie A. Hancock,
\npresident of the college. “By establishing a
\nscholarship in Amy’s name, we hope to begin
\nthe healing process with the Stock family and
\nso many others whose lives she touched in
\nthe greater Saratoga and SUNY Empire communities.<\/p>\n

“At the same time, this scholarship enables
\nus to keep Amy in our thoughts and carry forward
\nher commitment to sustainability and the
\nenvironment we all share.”<\/p>\n

Awards will be made to undergraduate
\nfemale students with financial need, who are
\nenrolled in a program in the sciences and who
\nmeet the foundation’s scholarship eligibility
\ncriteria. Preference will be given to students
\nwho, as Stock did, demonstrate a commitment
\nto bringing environmentally sustainable practices
\nto their communities.<\/p>\n

Special consideration will be given to students
\nfrom underrepresented populations,
\nsuch as those who were raised in single-parent
\nhomes, and are pursuing a degree in environmental
\nsciences or studies.<\/p>\n

As a leader of Sustainable Saratoga, she
\ngalvanized environmental experts and civic
\nleaders and together they laid the foundation
\nfor a continually growing organization engaged
\non many fronts in the community.<\/p>\n

Stock’s efforts in environmental sustainability
\nincluded creating urban community
\ngardens, green spaces and accessible, effective
\npublic transportation.<\/p>\n

She also was a freelance news and grant
\nwriter for Capital Roots, formerly Capital District
\nCommunity Gardens, and other nonprofit
\nenvironmental groups. She was also a contributor
\nto the Saratoga Business Journal<\/em> and Glens
\nFalls Business Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Stock earned a B.S. in biomedical computing
\nfrom the Rochester Institute of Technology
\nand an M.A. in environmental studies from
\nEvergreen State College, Olympia, Wash. She
\nreturned to the Capital Region in 2002 to be
