Douglas Ward, Mark Straus, and Tom Gardner
\nknow the history of Saratoga Springs and its
\ndowntown district.<\/p>\n

Their buildings, located at 464-468 and 454
\nBroadway are between 100 and 150 years old,
\nbringing with them a historical significance that
\ncomes with many of the buildings on Broadway
\nin downtown Saratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

Straus views himself not as a landlord, but “as
\nthe steward of the building, the caretaker. We
\ncontinually reinvest in the properties so they can
\nlast another 100 to 150 years,” he said. “Continued
\nimprovement is our goal.”<\/p>\n

Solar power was the next step to take as a way
\nto ensure these buildings continue to endure, but
\nin a modern and environmentally responsible way.
\nIt began on Nov. 23, when Apex Solar Power started
\ninstallation of a solar power system.<\/p>\n


\nStraus, Gardner, and Ward have been committed
\nto Saratoga and its history for decades, through
\ntheir involvement with historic preservation work
\nbeginning in the 1970s, to currently being active
\nmembers of the Saratoga Preservation Foundation.<\/p>\n

Straus said he wants to see more buildings and
\nbusiness owners go solar.<\/p>\n

“The benefits, both financial and as far as
\nenergy efficiency goes, it was an easy decision. I
\nhave been encouraging other building owners to
\ngo solar as well, they are waiting to see the results
\nof my project,” he said.<\/p>\n

The 60,000-watt solar system being installed
\nby Apex Solar Power stands to offset 74 percent
\nof the combined electrical usage of the buildings,
\nsaid Strauss, saving them over $160,000 in utility
\ncosts over the next 20 years.<\/p>\n

The project stemmed from the efforts and
\nsupport of the city’s Solarize Saratoga program,
\na community outreach program that educated
\nresidents about the benefits of solar power, and
\nprovided a group discount for those who enrolled
\nto get a free solar estimate. Strauss said it was
\nthrough this program that Apex got involved,
\nas they were selected by Solarize Saratoga as an
\ninstaller for the program.<\/p>\n

“We understand that Saratoga has history, and
\nthat there are dedicated individuals like Mark
\nwho want to not only encourage progress, but
\npreserve what has been there for over a century,”
\nsaid Ben Sopczyk, director of marketing at Apex
\nSolar. “This will be our second installation in the
\nhistoric district of Saratoga Springs and both have
\nbeen required to undergo board review before we
\ncould obtain a building permit. I think they have
\nfound a great balance between monitoring and
\nregulating what improvements can be made while
\nbeing supportive of new ones.”<\/p>\n

Nick Clingerman, a project manager at Apex
\nsaid the city Planning Board “has been great to
\nwork with, and have shown to be very forwardthinking
\nwhen it comes to these types of improvements.
\nIt’s great they are helping progress
\nlike this in Saratoga while preserving the historic
\narchitecture. Many of the buildings on Broadway
\nhave flat roofs, these give flexibility in the system.
\nIn fact, the solar panels for this project will not
