The year 2016 will be the year of security.
\nPhysical, virtual or cyber, it’s all about security.
\n2016 will be the year that security takes the stage
\nin a major way.<\/p>\n

After all the breaches of last year, companies
\nbig and small are being pushed to consider who
\nhas access to their data and how do they protect
\nit. It will also be the year that organizations start
\nto consider how they consume technology services
\nand will demand the model bends to how
\nthey desire to use them. The IT service model will
\nchange from providing a set service list to one of
\nal la` carte services. Clients will want it their way
\nwith a selection of services that meet their needs.<\/p>\n

As small and large organizations alike continue
\nto expand the use of technology, the cloud
\nand the buzz word “internet of things” (or IoT),
\nthey are starting to consider the security implications
\nof their decisions. Security is no longer
\nthe ability to provide a penetration test of the
\nenvironment, list the items wrong and remedy
\nthem. That is old thinking in a new world.<\/p>\n

Businesses will want a macro-level view of
\ntheir security needs. They will want to know that
\ntheir data and access to their networks are constantly
\nmonitored and any leak of information
\nis not just detected but qualified and quantified.
\nThis holds true in both the physical and virtual
\nworld.<\/p>\n


\nEmployee access to physical files, doors and
\noffices will be monitored, documented and controlled.
\nIt will be critical in case of a breach to
\nunderstand who had access to the file cabinets
\nin a room and when were they last in there. This
\nwill be as important as understanding how a
\nhacker gained access to a virtual system and took
\ninformation. A company will expect that all the
\ninformation of who, what, when, where and why
\nwill be available to them.<\/p>\n

In the cyber world, organizations will want to
\nknow if an email left their systems with information
\nthat is confidential or contains personally
\nidentifiable information, or PII, know the cost of
\nthat potential breach and be prepared to respond
\naccordingly.<\/p>\n

This will put IT in direct connection with the
\ninsurance world. Once you can monitor, define
\nthe data leaving, and the potential exposure in
\nterms of financial costs of that data, organizations
\nwill want to purchase coverage via a cyber
\ninsurance or cyber liability insurance plan that
\nmatch the liabilities they have.<\/p>\n

Having the right knowledge of the potential
\ncosts of exposure will allow organizations to
\nright-size the policies and ensure that the proper
\ncoverage is in place. This is the 2016 technology
\noutlook for many small businesses.<\/p>\n

The way that businesses consume technology
\nwill continue to evolve. Long gone are the days
\nwhen the leaders of a company trust a single
\nresource to manage the growing complexity of
\ntoday’s networks. In the same vain, long gone
\nare the days of waiting for things to break and
\nthen rushing to fix them. Six Sigma, TQI, TQM,
\n5S , Kaizen and other management philosophies
\nare taking over and demanding that IT take the
\nsame approach as all the other departments, fixing
\nsystems before they reach a point of failure.<\/p>\n

Can you imagine waiting until bankruptcy to
\nstart cutting costs in your company? You would
\nnever do that, you would have controls and plans
\nin place and be constantly monitoring cash flow.
\nSo why would you ever want to wait until your
\nIT is broken before you fix it?<\/p>\n

Using these concepts, organizations will want
\nto pick the way service is delivered, be it a flat rate
\nmodel in which everything is covered and the
\ntechnology firms get paid to reduce downtime
\nand increase planning, or a model of on-demand
\nservice where systems are monitored and decisions
\nto act are left to the organizations leadership,
\nand any hybrid mix. Technology firms must
\nevolve to fit the client needs and not vice-versa,
\nagain long gone are the days of “buy this, trust
\nme” or “call us if it breaks”.<\/p>\n

Clients and organizations are more sophisticated
\nbuyers of technology and technology
\nservices. The right technology firms understand
\nthis and are ready to deliver.<\/p>\n

Security in all its forms, tied with insurance
\npolicies that are tied to the actual liabilities will
\nprovide a changing climate for many small and
\nmedium businesses. Tie this to tech savvy business
\nleadership and you have the makings of
\nwhat is to be in 2016.<\/p>\n

Toss in the ability to provide services that
\nclients need, at the exact time they need them,
\nmeasured to a way that fits their business model
\nand you have the look of a modern technology
\nfirm.<\/p>\n

In 2016, these two items will take the lead in
\nthe economics around technology in the coming
\nyear. After all, won’t you sleep better if you
\nknow you have the right technology, supported
\nin the right way, with data secured properly and
\ncovered with an umbrella of insurance? That is
\ntechnology nirvana for the new year that will
\ngive even the most hardened business owner a
