Dollar General<\/a> expands
\nacross the country, the corporation plans to build
\nan additional distribution center in the northeastern
\nUnited States and one of the locations being
\nconsidered is in Wilton.<\/p>\nThe distribution center would be built off Ballard
\nRoad, in a complex that currently contains
\ndistribution centers for both Ace Hardware and
\nTarget. There would be two sites, approximately
\n70 acres and 20 acres each.<\/p>\n
The project is expected to create 420 jobs, according
\nto the company.<\/p>\n
Dollar General is experiencing immense
\ngrowth and plans to open 900 new stores in 2016,
\ncompany officials said. They recently opened
\nseveral new stores in Maine and Rhode Island,
\nas well as in Upstate New York area.<\/p>\n
\nA proposed $92.4 million distribution center
\nwould supply merchandise to 1,000 stores
\nthroughout the northeast, according to the
\ncompany. Plans filed with the town call for one
\nindustrial Warehouse of about 855,161 square
\nfeet on 93.29 acres.<\/p>\n
"The closest distribution center is in Bethel,
\nPennsylvania," said Crystal Ghassemi, a spokeswoman
\nfor the company. "We want to make sure
\nthere is another distribution center nearby."<\/p>\n
Adding another distribution center will help
\nmake shipping items to regional stores much
\nmore efficient, she said.<\/p>\n
The company is reviewing potential sites.<\/p>\n
"We're looking at Wilton as one of many places
\nfor a distribution center to help better serve our
\nnortheastern communities," said Ghassemi.
\n"Wilton is close to the interstate, which of course
\nmakes it easy for our distribution purposes."<\/p>\n
It is not known when a decision will be reached.<\/p>\n
"There's no set timetable," said Ghassemi.<\/p>\n
"We'll take the time to look everything over and
\ndo what is necessary to make the right decision
\nfor the company."<\/p>\n
Art Johnson, Wilton town supervisor, said he
\nis excited about the project's potential.<\/p>\n
"Anytime a business locates here and brings in
\nnew jobs, I think it's a good thing," said Johnson.
\n"When the Mount McGregor prison closed, we
\nlost a lot of jobs. So we would be getting those
\nback."<\/p>\n
Johnson said the facility would also create
\nmore tax revenue, and employees would spend
\nmore money in the town of Wilton, which are
\nboth economic benefits.<\/p>\n
"[The center] may jump-start some of the other
\nsites that are here already," said Johnson.<\/p>\n
The company signed an option to buy the
\nWilton property for $6.53 million from Parillo
