A proposed development on 200 acres in
\nLuther Forest– if approved by the Stillwater
\nTown Board–could result in of 40 “rural
\nresidences” and commercial space designed to
\nmeet the needs of GlobalFoundries.<\/p>\n
It would include single-family homes on
\nlots ranging in size from three-quarters of
\nan acre to 12 acres, and some commercial
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
The project is being proposed by the Luther\/
\nMackay family, which owns the land. The fifth
\ngeneration of the Luther\/Mackay family, four
\nsiblings and a cousin, took over the reins of
\nthe Luther Forest Corp. when Alec Mackay
\n(father of the siblings) retired and moved to
\nNew Hampshire last July.<\/p>\n
According to Marissa Mackay who, with her
\nbrother Cailean is responsible for the day-today
\nmanagement of the company, the development
\nwould help grow the business community
\naround the Global Foundries manufacturing
\nplant. It may include an extended-stay hotel
\nand will probably have office and warehouse
\nspace but probably no retail tenants.<\/p>\n
\nCailean Mackay, who holds the title of
\nexecutive vice president, is spearheading the
\nnew residential and commercial development,
\nMarissa said.<\/p>\n
Plans are to subdivide the residential portion
\nof the development–about half the land
\ninvolved–and sell it to a developer to build
\nand sell the homes, she said. The family will
\ndevelop the commercial section themselves
\nand look for long-term tenants.<\/p>\n
Luther Forest began five generations ago, in
\n1898, when Tommy Luther began accumulating
\nland for a 7,000-acre timber farm. About
\nhalf of the land remains in forest and Mackay
\nforesees developing another 1,000 acres or so
\nin the future, leaving 2,500 acres as a managed
\nforest and tree farm.<\/p>\n
Alec Mackay and his father, Bill Mackay, began
\ndeveloping Luther Forest with several residential
\nsubdivisions. Bill Mackay also founded
\nSaratoga Water Services Inc. to supply water
\nto the new homes. GlobalFoundries came into
\nthe picture about 10 years ago and purchased
\nabout half of the property.<\/p>\n
Currently, the family's businesses also include
\nthe Saratoga Lake Golf Club, managed
\nby Cailean, and Saratoga Water Services, Inc.,
\nmanaged by Marissa, as well as a logging
\noperation.<\/p>\n
The family plans to expand the golf club,
\nadding a banquet facility, restaurant, bar, and
\nlocker rooms.<\/p>\n
"I wanted to dive into another part of the
\nbusiness," Cailean said. He sees a need for
\nmore wedding and banquet space in Saratoga
\nCounty.<\/p>\n
The project, a Planned Development District,
\nis on the Town Board's late February
\nagenda. Although Luther Forest is in both
\nStillwater and Malta, the proposed development
