In an increasingly technology-driven, globally
\nconnected world, there is an escalating
\nneed for legal specialists in data protection,
\nprivacy and cybersecurity. In recognition of
\nthis need, Albany Law School announced it
\nwill be offering a new concentration in law
\nand cybersecurity beginning in the fall.<\/p>\n
The program–a collaboration with the
\nUniversity at Albany’s School of Emergency
\nPreparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity
\n(CEHC)–will prepare J.D. graduates
\nto provide counsel to a broad range of industries
\nand individuals on an array of legal
\nmatters, including: data breach; cybercrime;
\ncompliance with state, local, federal, and
\ninternational privacy laws and regulations;
\nimplementing security policies; records management;
\ndigital media privacy; litigation; and
\nmore, college officials said.<\/p>\n
“The security of our personal information
\nand technological infrastructures in business
\nand government is an ever-growing concern.
\nThe need for legal experts in this field will only
\nbecome greater as networks expand and the
\nvalue of data increases,” said Alicia Ouellette,
\npresident and dean of Albany Law School.
\n“Our law school, located in New York’s capital
\nand the heart of Tech Valley, is an ideal lab for
\nstudying these areas.”<\/p>\n
“This program is precisely the kind of collaboration
\nwe envisioned when we developed
\nan affiliation with Albany Law School,” said
\nUAlbany President Robert J. Jones. “Together,
\nour two institutions are leveraging capacity
\nthat will provide highly specialized training
\nfor cybersecurity professionals and meet a
\nmassive and growing need both regionally
\nand nationally.”<\/p>\n
\nTwenty-four credits will be required to
\ncomplete the concentration in law and cybersecurity,
\na natural component of the law
\nschool's Innovation Pathway. Courses in the
\ncore curriculum will be offered at Albany Law
\nSchool and the University at Albany. Students
\nenrolled at Albany Law School can take these
\nclasses at the University at Albany as part of
\nthe pursuit of their law degree and will not
\nrequire separate matriculation, application to
\nthe University at Albany, or additional tuition.<\/p>\n
Some sample courses at Albany Law include:
\ncyberspace law; cybersecurity law;
\nprivacy law; international law of war & crime;
\nadvanced evidence (elective); and legal oversight
\nof innovation (elective).<\/p>\n
Students may cross-register for courses
\nat the University at Albany including: Intelligence
\nAnalysis for Homeland Security;
\nDisaster, Crisis, and Emergency Management
\nand Policy; Political Violence, Insurgency,
\nand Terrorism; and Principles and Practices
\nof Cybersecurity.<\/p>\n
