Some new Italian cuisine is coming to downtown
\nBallston Spa with the opening of Russo’s Bar
\nand Grill.<\/p>\n

The restaurant will be located at 15 Prospect
\nSt., formerly the D-Line Pub. It will be part of the
\nRusso family restaurant business that started in
\nAmsterdam many years ago.<\/p>\n

Owner Michael Russo said his great-grandfather
\nstarted the family business with Russo’s Grill on
\nRoute 5 in Amsterdam in 1920, after coming to
\nAmerica from Sicily. Since then, the successful operation
\nhas expanded with Russo’s Adirondack Grill
\non Route 30 in Broadalbin, and now Ballston Spa.<\/p>\n

Russo said they are hoping to open the restaurant
\nbetween the second and third week of
\nFebruary.<\/p>\n


\nRusso said the family credits their success to
\nbeing able to combine the importance of family
\nand food.<\/p>\n

"We're very conscious of our own history with
\nthe family business, but it's just as important to us
\nthat by opening a restaurant someplace, we're becoming
\npart of the community there," he said. "After
\nall, before it was known for its food, and even after,
\nthe original Russo's was vital as a place where locals
\ngathered to meet their friends and feel at home."<\/p>\n

Russo's is known for Italian classics, like baked
\nziti and penne vodka and sausage, but they also
\nhave cold and hot sandwiches, as well as bar food
\nfavorites.<\/p>\n

Russo said the Ballston Spa location will have
\na very comfortable "homey" atmosphere. He said
\nthey have changed and improved the decor in the
\nspace, adding their own old-world Italian flair. They
\nwill also have a full-service bar.<\/p>\n

"I'm excited for people to see the kind of space
\nwe're creating," he said. "We've done a lot of work on
\nthe building, expanding the kitchen without losing
\nany seating, adding wood moldings and exposing
\nbrick. You'll definitely see a lot of wood, brick and
\ncustom-stained glass, just like the original Russo's.
\nWe've built a gorgeous bar that will seat about 14
\npeople, with some adjacent high tables and two
\ndining areas. It's very intimate," said Russo.<\/p>\n

Russo added that the details are what people
\nwill be talking about.<\/p>\n

"The walls will be adorned with lots of photographs
\nfrom Russo's during the old days of the '20s,
\n'30s and '40s, along with some antique cooking
\nequipment we've been collecting, which I think
\nis very representative of what Russo's is all about,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n

Russo said fusing his family's history, which
\ndates back almost 100 years, with people's lifestyle
\ntoday is part of what has made them so successful.<\/p>\n

"Food has been bringing people together since
\nway before then, since people started cooking back
\nin Neolithic times. Italians in particular have always
\nemphasized this communal aspect of sharing a
\nmeal, and big part of what we're doing is hopefully
\ncreating that feeling for our guests and sparing
\nthem all the work of having to cook it themselves,"
\nsaid Russo.<\/p>\n

The original location in Amsterdam is still open
\nand remains a prominent fixture in the community.
\nRusso said he practically grew up in that restaurant,
\nlearning about what makes patrons happy. It's
\nwhere he learned to make what he describes as
\nhearty antipasto, sandwiches and traditional pasta
\ndishes he serves at his soon to be three locations.<\/p>\n

"There are some items that anyone who knows
\nmy father's cooking will tell you that you have to
\ntry–a great breaded eggplant, or chicken, or veal
\nparmesan, homemade sausage, and greens-and-beans,
