“Our goal is that 50 years from now people
\nwill still be flocking to this room,” Caff\u00c3\u00a8
\nLena Executive Director Sarah Craig said
\nat a Jan. 26 news conference, standing on
\nthe stage of the historic folk music venue
\non Phila Street in Saratoga Springs.<\/p>\n

Those words were spoken at the announcement
\nof a $500,000 philanthropic
\npartnership between the venue and Saratoga’s
\nBonacio Construction that will further
\nrevitalize not only the 55-year-old Caff\u00c3\u00a8,
\nbut its neighborhood, because as part of
\nthe Campaign for Caff\u00c3\u00a8 Lena, Bonacio assumes
\nthe Caff\u00c3\u00a8’s parking lot at Phila and
\nHenry Streets.<\/p>\n

Sonny Bonacio announced from the stage
\nplans to construct a mixed-use building,
\nwhich will feature an elevator and stairwell
\nshared with the Caff\u00c3\u00a8, at 47 Phila. The apartment
\nspace, with an address of 55 Phila St.,
\nwill have eight residential units.<\/p>\n

He said if all goes well, the project could
\nbe started in the spring and completed in a
\nlarge part by the end of 2016, with interior
\nwork being finished up into early 2017.<\/p>\n


\nCaff\u00c3\u00a8 Lena itself will have to close for a
\ntime, but Craig said there will be “satellite”
\nconcerts held at other venues in the city,
\nso that the organization and its board of
\ndirectors can continue to bring top-flight
\nconcerts to the area, as it has done since its
\n1960 opening by the now legendary Lena
\nSpencer.<\/p>\n

Performers including Bob Dylan, David
\nBromberg, Jerry Jeff walker, Arlo Gurthrie
\nmore played music there in their younger
\nyears.<\/p>\n

Caff\u00c3\u00a8 Lena purchased the building in
\n1998, but many renovations were needed,
\nincluding an elevator to the second-floor
\nvenue for handicapped access.<\/p>\n

Bonacio’s contribution brings funds
\nraised for the $1.25 million capital project
\nto $825,000. With continued fundraising
\nthrough winter and spring, groundbreaking
\non the mixed-use building and launch of 47
\nPhila Street renovations is expected to take
\nplace in late spring.<\/p>\n

With guidance from Frost Hurff Architects,
\nthe Caff\u00c3\u00a8 will begin long-planned
\nmajor renovations, including: overhaul of
\nthe 47 Phila St. infrastructure; expansion
\nof the listening room from 85 to 110 seats,
\nwith enhanced sightlines, sound and listener
\ncomfort; modernization and relocation of
\nkitchen, green room, administrative and rest
\nroom spaces; and improvement of existing
\nstairway.<\/p>\n

“This work is a giant step towards our
\nfuture,” said Stanley McGaughey, president
\nof the Caff\u00c3\u00a8’s board of directors.<\/p>\n

“We’re excited to energize Phila Street
\nand sustain the historic Caff\u00c3\u00a8 at the same
\ntime,” said Bonacio, whose company will also
\nupdate flooring and roofing of 47 Phila St.
\nas an aspect of the partnership.<\/p>\n

The building also houses Hattie’s Restaurant,
\nCole’s Woodwind Shop and Sweet
\nMimi’s Cafe & Bakery.<\/p>\n

Bonacio said all details aren’t complete,
\nbut estimated the residential units would
\nsell in the $600,000 to $700,000 range for
\ntwo bedrooms.<\/p>\n

The entry to the facility, now a small door
\nwith a narrow stairway, will be about 20 feet
\nwide with a lot of glass on the facade. It will
\nbe about 20 feet recessed from the sidewalk,
\nallowing for a small, landscaped courtyard
\narea with benches.<\/p>\n

Bonacio said the neighbors have been
\nsupportive of the project. In the coming
\nweeks, he will be seeking the necessary city
\napprovals.<\/p>\n

Craig said after buying the building,
\nthere was some discussion of abandoning
\nthe original music room and finding an arrangement
\nwith a first-floor venue and more
\nparking. It was rejected.<\/p>\n

“This room is irreplaceable,” said Craig.
\n“It’s the only club left where the ’60s folk
\nmusic revolution took place.” The spirit of
\nthat era and the music that continues today
\nis “Inextricably linked to the brick and mortar
\nof this building.”<\/p>\n

Bonacio called it “an amazing amenity to
\nSaratoga Springs,” adding that “live music
\nis something that our culture deeply needs.<\/p>\n

McGaughey said improvements to the
\nroom itself will include addition of 25 seats,
\nfor a capacity of 110; a state-of-the-art sound
\nsystem; a higher ceiling and revamped flooring;
\nand improved air conditioning.<\/p>\n

While modernizing for comfort and
\nsafety, the modifications, said Craig, “will
\naccentuate that feeling of history and magic
\nthat’s in the room.”<\/p>\n
